A traditional, worn-leather Chesterfield sofa is whimsical when combined with a funky painting of a larger-than-life catfish. As one of the first rooms visitors experience when they enter this restored Brooklyn townhouse, the laid back design of this eclectic mudroom sets a comfortable, casual tone.

White Contemporary Mudroom With White Cabinets & Built-In Bench
Designer Justine Sterling renovated a low ceiling basement space in a 1920s Colonial with a primary focus to create a small arts and crafts studio. The basement space could solve some of family’s increasing need for a place to store shoes and coats by creating a mudroom niche, a small laundry area and even an upgrade to the teeny powder room.
In this renovation, designer Claire Paquin reconfigured a powder room and hall closet to make space for a mudroom the original house lacked. The clean, transitional space is light and bright, with all-white millwork and built-in storage that extends to the ceiling to maximize space. A fun, modern pendant continues the clean white color scheme.
Your mudroom doesn't necessarily need to be an expansive storage unit with shelves, cubbies and drawers. Susan Howell says the essentials of a mudroom should be entirely based on the needs of the homeowner. Smaller families with teenagers may only require a small bench and hooks for hanging coats. "What is really essential in a mudroom is knowing the demands of the mudroom before it's even built, so that whatever is essential to the homeowner's family is present in the final product," she says.

This contemporary mudroom proves that even small spaces can pack a major design punch. A large floral patterned wallpaper combined with a bright yellow painting livens up the walls while built-in shelving instantly clears up clutter.
The mudroom boasts a beachy feel with white shiplap walls and dark blue accents. Built-in bench seating on either side of the console table holds storage above and below and features blue cushions and striped pillows to add comfort.
