“The goal is always to maximize space and get as much storage as possible, so you can get things put away and not have them out,” says designer Linda Woodrum of the HGTV Smart Home 2015 master closet design. “The more places you have to put things, the less clutter you have out, and it just makes everything look better.”
This functional entry serves as a mudroom, complete with built-in seating for putting on shoes and built-in shelves and cabinetry for added storage. Rustic tile floors are durable and appropriate to the cottage setting. White trim, including a white-painted plank ceiling, is crisp and bright against pale blue walls, creating a cheery space that reflects light and feels airy and open.
Detached Garaged Clad in Whitewashed Wood Shingles
A detached garage with wood shingle facade painted in white evokes the look of a carriage house and echoes the style of the adjacent French country-style home. Above the garage is a small guest apartment with a balcony from which to enjoy views of the wooded property in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Lakeshore Designs team gave this mudroom a crisp, tailored feel while still making it ultra-functional. Baskets inside high cubbies conceal loose items such as gloves, while drawers keep footwear and other gear hidden away. Even coats and bags hanging from the hooks won't look untidy, thanks to the clean backdrop. Throw pillows and a cheery rug make the space feel polished.
Can't beat a dutch door for charm factor (bonus: more ventilation!). Other lovely details in the laundry room include the patterned mosaic tile floor and folding table with a turned leg, reminiscent of early 20th century Colonial homes.
A perfect spot between outdoors and in, this mudroom provides a bright place to put on and remove shoes (which can be stashed in the drawers below) and hang a hat, coat or towel. The slate floor hides dirt well and is easy to clean — perfect for the inevitable messes.
Even the laundry room got a redo! Fresh white cabinets and a gray stone floor match the farmhouse aesthetic seen in the rest of the house. There are also smart upgrades, like a hanging rod between cabinets, offering an easy place to dry more delicate clothes.
