Erin and Ben agreed with the homeowners that the home would be better served by restoring the original porch. The French doors get updated for proper function and are painted ox-blood on the exterior side to match the front door, and white on the inside in keeping with the interior trim.
Cozy Covered Balcony With Rich Wood Ceiling, Red Cushioned Wicker Chairs and Warm Glow Lantern Light
Rich polished wood creates a warm frame for this inviting balcony. Wicker armchairs are topped with plush red tufted cushions creating a nice color contrast to the forrest green siding. A matching wicker table with glass top separates the chair for a simple and intimate set up.
A stained cedar fence guarantees privacy in this home's side yard, where a mix of pine and oak trees, ornamental grasses and drought-tolerant perennials comprise the landscape design. The home's eco-friendly, exterior building materials include both smooth and scraped synthetic limestone blocks and fiber-cement siding, a product composed of 50-percent recycled content (fly ash) and wood fiber pulp supplied from sustainably managed forests.
The muted color of the siding allows dark red shutters to add character to this craftsman-style home. The dark hue carries over to the brick chimney and iron fence. The large front porch and decorative eave brackets are characteristic of the Craftsman style.
The look of the porch is transformed with fresh white paint, khaki trim, painted concrete floors and a ceiling fan in a more classic design. But the star of the new porch is the set of twin chair swings — Ben's custom take on the traditional Southern porch swing. Each is a variation on the familiar Adirondack chair design, and they were handmade by Ben using reclaimed wood from demo of one of the home's interior walls.
Removing the aged awning and opening up the porch made all the difference in helping restore the home's traditional Craftsman appeal. Other exterior enhancements included subtly offsetting the existing trim in a khaki-cream and painting the front door in blue for added punch.
Craftsman Home Exterior With Front Yard Rock Bed, Concrete Walkway and Green Siding
Chocolate brown trim frames the green siding of this craftsman home creating a woodsy color scheme. A concrete walkway travels through the front yard to steps leading to the covered front porch and entryway. A rock bed running parallel to the walkway gives the front yard an intriguing element and adds rough texture to the natural calm of the space.
Contemporary Craftsman-Style Mountain Home Entrance
A lofty cathedral ceiling makes for a grand entrance in the foyer and allows transom windows to let in ample natural light. The stacked stone facade, lantern sconces and contemporary wooden door give this exterior a rustic, Craftsman look.
