Blue and Brown Midcentury Sitting Room With Red Chairs
Sometimes a smaller space can be exactly the right size to experiment with bold patterns and colors. In this sitting room, textured neutral wallpaper is a good jumping off place for the rich blue patterns and red chairs.
This mid-century modern sitting area features a a mix of patterns in shade of gray and gold. A gray and white graphic upholstered chair plays off a solid gray sofa and a gray and white rug. A pair of round mirrors on the wall add organic shapes to the room's minimal lines.
A rich red rug helps mark out this sitting area, complemented by a beautiful midcentury modern coffee table and a cool stacking book shelf. A colorful painting of vintage soda bottles unifies the space.

Formal Sitting Room with Warm Teal Walls and a Red Rug
This formal sitting room overlooks the patio, so designers wanted the colors in this room to reflect the warmth of the outdoors. Natural light pours into the space from the large sliding glass doors, making the space feel bright, while the teal walls make the space feel warm and colorful. The live edge wood art piece adds a little outdoor beauty to the design, while the red rug complements the teal walls and adds texture to the space.
Barcelona Chair and Lucite Footstool in Traditional Room
Mid-century meets modern with this brown leather and metal Barcelona chair and lucite footstool. A traditional neutral rug lies beneath while a console table along the back wall mixes more mid-century touches among a traditional lamp, pair of candles and circular mirror.
Midcentury Modern Formal Sitting Room with White Knoll Boucle Couch
Since this is the first room guests see upon entry to the home, designers went for the wow factor in this formal sitting room. The teal walls and bold rug are fantastic statement pieces that make the space feel warm, but the real treasure in this room is the sofa. A thrift store find, the homeowner wanted it reupholstered in white fabric, but feared that a young child and a dog would destroy the elegant fabric. Eager to make the homeowner's dreams a reality, designers tested many different fabrics for their durability and livability, and the classic Knoll boucle was the winner.
Posh Sitting Area With Gray Accent Wall and Metallic Sofa
Gray hues are paired with a neutral stone wall and parquet flooring to give this sitting area a luxurious feel. A glass coffee table sits between two midcentury style armchairs and the metallic sofa, while two additional brown leather chairs are placed on either side of the fireplace. A modern chandelier offers a final touch.
Give your version of midcentury style a more personal look by letting your home’s geographic location influence the design. For this house in Austin, Texas, for example, designer Christen Ales, chose colors and motifs that nod to the southwestern site—and yet still have a midcentury look. “The décor mixes fun bohemian patterns and textures, like this wallpaper from Cavern Home, with modern and more traditional Mexican style furniture silhouettes for a clean, but eclectic look,” she says.
