The lighter natural oak base of the island coordinates with the drawers by the range, and provides contrast for the island’s matte Mesabi Black Granite counter and the matte black cabinets flanking the range.
Neutral tones and Scandinavian-inspired furniture fill this modern living room. Framed records hang above the wall-mounted TV opposite a large navy sofa with chaise. Oversized windows let it lots of natural light and are treated with neutral, horizontally-striped drapes.
Instead of color, texture adds the visual interest in this chic master bedroom: wood slat paneling behind the bed, wood floors, leafy green houseplants. The simple palette highlights the lush landscape outside the window.
Designer Brian Patrick Flynn says this urban kitchen’s almost 10-foot-long center island was designed to be a spot for food prep and working, with bookshelves incorporated in front of the island that offer a chance to add your own personality to the space. “There’s not enough width here to sit and then also be able to access the door to the basement,” he explains.
Like the other main living spaces in this urban home, the dining room and fireplace area have a whitewashed wood floor with a low-gloss, low-maintenance style that creates a beautiful, fresh and clean look.
The design and build team kept the home’s existing 11-foot-high ceiling in the kitchen and dining area and extended that same ceiling height into the new addition where the living room with sliding-glass doors now sits. “Previously you couldn’t get to the backyard from the ground floor space,” says build manager Dan Faires. “Now you can see the backyard when you walk into the home.”
The open floor plan of this minimalist home is calm and comfortable. Upholstered gray barstools pull up to the waterfall countertop bar for an extra dining spot, while a mid-century modern dining table pairs with Eames chairs in the dining room. A floating blue buffet adds a touch of color and maintains the airy quality of the space.
This side view of the kitchen looking toward the living room shows how the island was placed to allow good traffic flow in and out of the space. A wide aisle between the range and the sink in the island makes it easy to move between the kitchen’s work zones.
This living room features a plum and sage green color scheme and a minimalist approach to decor. Glass doors, windows and light-colored walls keep the space feeling bright, and a wood-burning stove adds an unexpected touch.
