A bright, boldly patterned rug mixes with other colorful textiles to anchor the dining area of this eclectic courtyard. A large-scale, two-toned globe pendant hangs above to light up the space. The patio’s wood structure is lined with mesh screening that filters light and provides privacy.
Contractor Matt Blashaw transformed a backyard patio into an outdoor home theater, complete with a movie screen, outdoor kitchen and popcorn machine. Colorful planters and a raining water feature steal the show.
When she first visited the site of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2015, landscape designer Katharine Webster noted blank, rectangular spaces in the entry leading to the home's front door. With voices of her Harvard professors in her head saying, "don't make corners for squirrels to die in," Webster filled the blank spaces with artwork and drought-tolerant shrubs.
The sitting area clearly demonstrates the color story for the porch: white and neutral base pieces with bright accents. The sectional sofa, wood coffee table and baroque wall mirror bring unexpected indoor sophistication to outdoor living. The pink, red and purple throw pillows pop against the stark white sofa. A geometric light fixture hangs above to provide lighting.
Glass panels on the deck railing allow for crystal-clear views of the backyard. A rattan, egg-shaped swing provides cozy, eclectic outdoor seating. Navy outdoor throw pillows serve as extra seating or a foot rest for the swing.
Take a corner of your patio and put it to use as an entertaining space. A bar is built in under the kitchen window in this outdoor space with a fire pit by DesignFix, a California interior design company. The bar, which has a red acrylic top, is supported by decorative wood roofing brackets. Rope lighting underneath makes the bar look cool at night, says designer Amanda Giles.
