An unexpected and quirky owl — in the form of a pillow — adds cheer and whimsy to this living space. The unique color combination of yellow and turquoise creates a space that feels bright and retro, while nearby blue-and-white accessories that feel more traditional create a room that's perfectly eclectic.
Despite the neutral color scheme, this nursery sets an inviting tone with shades gray, white and yellow. A variety of patterns--the wallpaper, yellow blanket, gray rocker and blue footstool--add personality to the soothing space.

The blue and brown contrast with the neutral tile flooring. Pattern pillows add a hint of orange, and a yellow blanket provides a large swatch of color.
The bedroom features black-and-white wallpaper that makes a dramatic contemporary statement against a traditional headboard and bedside table. Bamboo roman shades set behind the yellow window curtains add visual depth to the design, while blanket and throw pillows add layers of pattern and color.
Reclaimed wood was used to create a custom bed. The wall-mounted headboard provides a focal point for the space. Dark gray lines on the bed covers coordinate with the light gray wall color while yellow on the pillows and the throw blanket add soft color.
A large tufted headboard with turned corners looks beautiful against the rich color of the orange accent wall in this transitional bedroom. Patterned bed covers are accented with polka dot yellow pillows and a yellow striped throw blanket. A leather bench caps the end of the bed and matches the bed side table and small table in the adjoining sitting space.

The textural African juju hat sets the tone for the color palette and overall playful feel of this boy's bedroom. The bright colors pop beautifully against white walls. A play area on one half of this family room is perfect for keeping children entertained while adults can relax in the other half. A navy couch and brown leather chair contrast against the light yellow and white walls. A built-in fireplace with gray tile surrounds adds a great masculine detail to the design. Throw pillows, a blanket and fun wall art keep the space colorful.
With so much amazing design going on in this living room, it’s easy to miss some of the smaller details that make it work. Tamara does an excellent job of creating layers in this living room. Every instance of a pattern or color is echoed or repeated somewhere else in the room so that nothing feels out of place. Just in this vignette, the leopard print of the pillow is repeated in the stool, while the yellow of the throw blanket is repeated in several of the art pieces on the wall. This maximalist approach works best when every element in the room reinforces several others.
