As seen on Vacation House for Free, host Matt Blashaw used a mix of neutral tones and patterns throughout the living room of this lakefront home in Oakland, Maine. The natural stone fireplace and natural wood mantel adds texture and warmth, while the wooden slats on the ceiling help to add a rustic feel to the space. The plush furniture and colorful pillows add a bit of chic to the living room.
Holly Marsh set out to conquer the entryway clutter issue by turning a common household item into a clever organizational system. She found this vintage shutter at a local thrift store and hung it up next to the back door where everyone comes and goes. Then, she placed S hooks and clothespins on the wooden slats to hold everyone's keys and outgoing mail, invitations and other important memos. An old wooden box below keeps often-worn shoes contained, too. Now there's no excuse for missing keys, lost invites or misplaced bills.
Make your storage do double duty as decor. While the vanity cabinet in this 2016 National Kitchen + Bath Association Competition winning powder room is custom made, a standard vanity without doors on either side can add decorative storage to any small bathroom, says designer Stephanie A. Bruntz of Studio B Design. Bruntz says the diagonal slats in her custom cabinet are one of the more expensive elements, so adding a horizontal shelf or no shelf at all would be much cheaper. She adds that a stylish pendant can also create a designer look without breaking the bank. You can buy frosted mini glass pendants at Home Depot for under $20, while regular sizes range from $80-$100.
This beautiful, long outdoor porch spans the space between the modern home and the pool house. Special features include the tucked-away fireplace, multiple seating areas and the wood ceiling with open slats that creates geometric dashes of light on the patio floor.

These will become the slats. Next, cut three 1/4-inch strips to size as the bottom structure. Lastly, secure the bottom structure to the slats using wood glue.
To add contrast to the dark contemporary wood cabinets, beautiful hardwood floors with various shades of brown are used throughout the kitchen. The warmer slats of wood tie in well with the soft yellow walls.
Wood accents—the vanity, the mirror's trim, the slats supporting the tub—warm up this generously sized bathroom with a view. The gorgeous blue water seen outside the windows is the colorful main attraction of the neutral space.
For the outside of the house, designers used milled slats of cypress wood called Shou Sugi Ban, which have been charred, brushed and oiled. It's a low-maintenance material that also provides a crisp contrast with the home's light-colored interior.

Originally, the wood-paneled stairwell leading up to this attic was extremely dark and dingy. Horizontal slats of whitewashed pine lighten up the stairwell and the attic walls, turning the space into a refreshing yoga studio. Now the stairwell wall serves as the central divider between the area designated for yoga sessions and the space meant for desk work.
