This sitting area features two neutral upholstered chairs on either side of a wooden chest. Two metallic vases sit atop the chest, while a colorful painting hangs above. A pair of sconces adds a finishing touch.
The inviting queen bed includes a custom bed frame made with whitewashed planks of wood that create a look similar to a classic white fence. An industrial-style chest with metal frame and engineered wood finish on one side has three drawers for handy storage of bedroom essentials, with a clear glass table lamp with cotton shade on top for nighttime reading.
Instead of nightstands, a pair of wooden Bombay-style chests with a hand-painted red and white floral pattern add stylish storage on each side of the bed. "They look almost like they were picked up on a trip overseas and brought back," says designer Brian Patrick Flynn.
Whether wood or metal, antique or new, tables, chests and other furniture can provide prep space and storage just as well as a built-in island. This mobile, expandable island came from an antiques market in Atlanta for decorator Clinton Rice's townhome. An island like this is visually interesting and gives so much versatility for food prep and entertaining; plus if you need more room in your kitchen, you can move it to the side.
