For an easy fireplace upgrade you can do yourself, take a (web)page from Terri Klemm. The design pro and blogger transformed her dark and dated fireplace into something bright and beautiful by whitewashing the brick. Here’s how: White paint with an eggshell finish was brushed on in small sections, and then wiped down with rags to remove most of the paint. (She did two coats like this, to achieve the lightness she was looking for). For a finishing touch, she sanded over all the bricks with a medium grit sanding sponge. This brought touches of the original color through and gave her the rich texture she felt was missing after the whitewashing.
The real show piece in the new living room is the newly designed but old-world inspired fireplace. The surround was built out using vintage bricks and covered in white mortar for a whitewashed and textured finish that makes it look as if it had been there for generations.
The room's soft color palette allows the structural elements to stand out. A large brick pass-through fireplace and exposed wood ceiling beams add rustic charm to this elegant bedroom. A sparkling gold chandelier adds a touch of glam to the whitewashed wood bed with muted blue bedding.
Clean and modern sconces add a contemporary note to the whitewashed brick fireplace, while a palm frond adds a touch of greenery to the wood mantel. A pair of modern hot pink armchairs are accented by chrome and flank a glam side table.
A black ventless gas fireplace was made more dramatic with a whitewashed porcelain tile façade in a brick pattern that spans from the floor almost all the way to the ceiling for a clean and modern look. A flat-screen TV with art mode that allows viewing of beautiful works of art placed above the fireplace has a customizable walnut frame that adheres with magnets and helps the TV blend with the rest of the room's decor.
Whitewashed exposed wood beams give this living room a lofty, airy feel. Two sofas create the look of a sectional, but with more versatility. Floor poufs sit in front of the white brick fireplace to be used as extra seating or a foot rest.
This open and airy room features a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace in the same neutral, whitewashed tones that permeate the decor of the entire house. A wood plank ceiling runs the length of the space, adding architectural interest and setting the tone for the home's rustic-modern style.
Whitewashed bricks contrast the custom metal-studded sculpture to create a unique finish on the fireplace. “It’s almost reminiscent of old ironwork,” said designer Tiffany Brooks, whose inspiration for the finish was a pair of fishnet stockings. A flat-screen television displays a rotating loop of artwork to accent the space until it’s time to tune in to your favorite show.
