Designer Mallory Mathison Glenn installed striped sky blue and white fabric for a tented ceiling in a whimsical kid's bedroom during the 2017 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Homes for the Holidays Designer Showhouse. Composed of crisply-detailed, considered materials, surfaces and finishes, the home is a balance of sophistication and restraint. The two-story massing is designed to allow for a bold yet humble street presence, while each single-story wing extends through the site, forming intimate outdoor and indoor spaces. The upper story is clad in stucco, articulated as a floating white box, light in appearance and also acting as a veritable “tree house” for the children’s bedroom zone. The knots in the exposed portion of the wood add a desired texture and contrast to the clean and minimal massing of the white stucco.
Designer Claire Paquin carefully designed this child's bedroom in shades of white, gray and hot pink with an eye on what she might like in years to come. A built-in window seat and bookcases are perfect storage solutions for toys, books and games. And what little girl wouldn't love a crystal chandelier of her very own?
Camille Flurry's Athens, Ga., bedroom is the perfect example of a tween room done right. To create a one-of-a-kind, eclectic, super-cool space, Camille's mom, Amy, combined handed-down family pieces with finds from local flea markets, vintage boutiques and art festivals. The white bed and nightstand first belonged to Amy as a child. She supplemented these finds with traditional area rugs from local stores. The chandelier is a budget-saver from a local lighting company that Amy customized with red spray paint to brighten Camille's room.
Kate Landers of Kate Landers Events created an underwater wonderland any girl would adore. She used a white ruffle shower curtain as a backdrop for the dessert table, which "adds a perfect shabby chic element and looks like white ruffled waves — perfect for an under-the-sea celebration," she says. She believes repurposing items is a must when it comes to decorating your child's birthday party. In this case, she used a chandelier from the bedroom to hang over the dessert table. The addition has a sparkling appearance without any extra cost. Photo by Open Shade Studios
