A contemporary gray sofa and modern leather and wood armchair combine to create a lively eclectic sitting space for this office. A futuristic c-shaped side table works with a transitional floor lamp, tree stump side table and assorted textured throw pillows bringing understated surprise, whimsy and style. The green accent wall brightens the space while balancing the copper tones of the animal hide area rug.
This rustic sitting area features timbered walls and broad windows that offer a view of the gorgeous Wyoming countryside. A comfortable blue sofa adds a pop of color, while artwork gives a nod to the surrounding wildlife while bringing a touch of whimsy. A doorway opens to a wide wood deck, giving the room's occupants a private spot to hang out and enjoy the view.
In the bathroom, Ana Claudia shows off her unique talent for picking just the right tile for a space. White subway tile looks uber-cool laid both vertically and horizontally for maximum whimsy. Warm brick adds sophistication to the bathroom design. And modern brass his-and-her mirrors finish off the space, giving it a modern feel. The mix of aesthetics works perfectly in this forever family home.
The homeowners wanted this living room, like the rest of their home, to be family friendly, elegant, luxe and sophisticated, but with a sense of whimsy and fun. The space had to be equally comfortable and appealing for both kids and adults. The space plan offers great flexibility, with the large ottoman completely mobile and a small lucite lamp table that can be easily set aside for play dates.
Shades of blue form the base for this cool boy's room. A cushioned, navy headboard with nail head design brings a masculine touch to the space, while the orange pillows add some contrasting color. A metallic, mounted lamp provides light to the space, freeing up the nightstand to display the room's occupant's favorite things. To finish the design and add a touch of whimsy, a robot print hangs next to the bed.
This studio was designed as a workspace to create original artwork but also to showcase the client's art, artifacts and personal collections. While most of the furnishings in the room feel industrial, the lighted "Texas" sign brings a bit of folk art whimsy to the space. The rugged table and mismatched chairs provides a working surface for multiple people and projects, and pieces of modern art interjects color into the white room.
Small touches in this room give it a global feel as well as a touch of whimsy. Small planters are suspended over the tub for a pop of life and greenery. Also above the tub is a colorful piece of art found in a market in Mexico City, depicting a scene from the Day of the Dead.
Sometimes a little paint is all it takes to give a vintage piece a new look and new life as the centerpiece of a beautiful space. Case in point, a citron makeover turned this mid-sized dresser into the focus of a room that already has plenty going on. The natural mix of green and yellow along with the juxtaposition of patterns and solids gives this kid’s room a colorful sense of whimsy.
A colorful and sophisticated adult entertainment area with plenty of seating and bright bursts of color is an ideal place for casual entertaining or solitary relaxing. Cheetah print fabric for the stools is a subtle, yet fun way to bring some whimsy into the room while also providing easy, moveable seating for guests or events. A vintage piece from a local store becomes a focal point to display the homeowners' artwork.
Want a little solar whimsy in your garden? Try solar-powered glow-in-the-dark garden gnomes that double as daytime bird feeders. Your feathered friends get their nibble during the daylight hours while the gnome’s battery cell powers up, then at night, the bird-feeding figure decorates your outdoors with its (literally) glowing smile.
Children's rooms offer a chance to be playful, more so than in adult spaces such as lounges and living rooms. For a touch of whimsy, a table lamp made of stacked teapots with a woven seagrass shade is at home atop the side table next to Orly's rocker. The playfulness is appropriate for a nursery, and the organic shade fits perfectly with the all-natural aesthetic geared toward adult guests.
"Structured with whimsy" is how hostess, designer and tastemaker Danielle Rollins describes her Atlanta garden in the posh Buckhead neighborhood which she has designed to provide interesting views no matter what the angle. "I like the vistas" says Rollins. "One room goes to the next and invites you over." Clematis, roses, jasmine and honeysuckle in shades of white, silver and chartreuse keep a uniform look in the garden.
Blues take center stage in this classy living room, from the velvety sofas to the patterned pillows and even the coffee table books. Of course, there's no missing the zebra print sofa, which really livens up the soothing space. A flokati rug brings in a splash of whimsy, which is tempered by a clean-lined, contemporary coffee table. Flowering branches bring nature in and provide the crowning design touch to the space.
This woodsy and witty bathroom from Vermilion Design Interiors took its cue from a fox who designer Bill Cook says decorated this carriage house bath with some of his favorite things. Cook adds that, "while our main space of the apartment was inspired by a country English gentleman’s den, we chose to give the bathroom more of a sense of whimsy and humor. We even had a bar set up, because we felt that this Fox was a bit of a playboy."
Two long runs of counter space give plenty of room in this cottage kitchen. Blue-painted antique corbels hold open shelving and support the peninsula overhang, bringing vintage-inspired whimsy to the space. Designer Sarah Richardson, host of HGTV's "Sarah's Summer House," chose three different cabinet colors to create a dynamic color palette. She used natural materials and a lighthearted color for the backsplash, and the seeded glass cabinet doors bring an extra touch of softness.
Every open space in this home is decorated, from the walls to the floors. Near the door, the art in the living room continues to reflect the space’s mantra of simple, stylish and serene. A conceptual monochrome of light reflected into a camera lens from PurePhoto (www.purephoto.com) adds a touch of whimsy, while the full length mirror extends the room.
The back of this built-in bookcase is lined with Novogratz Constellation removable wallpaper. The off-white peel-and-stick paper with gold foil design creates striking contrast against the deep green walls and dark wood shelves and can easily be removed or replaced. Accessories like a "hello" sign made from wire, astronaut artwork, a moon LED night light and a brontosaurus tillandsia planter add to the whimsy of the display.
For Leyden and Lahzar art is as essential to their living space as furniture - and both often arrive at the home in the same way. “We collected the art and furniture pieces over time while traveling,” Leyden remembers. Opposite the living room, this gallery wall shows the couple’s full range of tastes with a variety of paintings and even a life-sized sculpture. At the same time, artistic pieces of furniture like the modern bentwood bar stool and colorful pouf play a similar role, adding notes of color and whimsy to the space.
