This mid-century modern kitchen and dining room features Spanish inspiration using a bold, black-and-white backsplash and blue perimeter cabinets. Four contemporary bar chairs sit at the warm walnut kitchen island with a marble countertop.
Originally a cramped 9 square feet, this pretty kitchen is now open, bright and so friendly. Designers took out a low soffit and rearranged cabinets to make space for more storage and a large island. They also removed walls in between the kitchen and dining room.
The homeowners were not interested in a white kitchen, but instead wanted something with a little bit of color, so designers brought in custom walnut cabinetry to bring the space to life. Those cabinets were topped with Luche de Luna quartzite counters and a waterfall island in the same stone. Finally, the design was finished with royal blue velvet stools with gold legs that bring out the warmth in the quartzite and complement the Brutalist chandelier.
A dusky, sage backsplash picks up the flecks of green in the dark marble countertops and island, creating a kitchen that feels put together and aesthetically pleasing. Modern walnut cabinets bring a brightness and natural element to the space; stainless steel appliances further establish the contemporary design scheme.

In this light-filled blue-and-white kitchen, a mix of materials helps break up the large expanse of the central island and define its multiple functions. For the prep zone, designer Kathleen Walsh chose Vermont White Quartzite while watershed-finished walnut warms up the breakfast bar area.
In the kitchen, tractor seat barstools welcome guests to perch next to the new waterfall countertop, paneled in solid walnut. For the Heath tile backsplash, the designer created visual interest by installing in a herringbone pattern. The gray tile stands out against the white cabinetry and adds depth to the design.
Sleek and warm, this midcentury modern eat-in kitchen exemplifies how form and function can meet beautifully. Walnut floors and cabinets enhance the room's uncluttered look and play off the light coming in from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The kitchen island is a perfect spot for a quick breakfast, while the dining table seats six for family dinner or entertaining.
Custom floating reclaimed shelves flank the farmhouse apron sink and play off the walnut kitchen island top while creating a textural contrast against the polished tile wall. Where the three vintage-style pendants now hang, there was a large wall closing off the entire kitchen. Demolishing the wall gave an opportunity to marry the two spaces and allow for bar seating.
A long row of walnut cabinetry acts as an anchoring device for the kitchen in the open-floor living space. Cabinetmaker Shaum Sinawi chose a vertical-grain walnut that pairs elegantly with the rich hue of the walnut floors. A large kitchen island provides more room for seating and food preparation, while sizable sliding glass doors let fresh air and natural light into the breakfast nook.
