For the dining room challenge on HGTV Design Star season 5, Emily Henderson and Michael Moeller design a space completely out of repurposed furnishings. They paint the ceiling a bright green to create an "intentional explosion" of color, and for her project, Emily attaches plastic flowers to a chandelier and paints the entire piece a crisp white.
The homeowners had to move into this house suddenly after being displaced by floods in Houston. They had a few family antiques and a lot of donated items. The designers created a cheerful space using fun patterns and vibrant color to unify the furnishings and fill the home with personality.
HGTV Design Star judge Genevieve Gorder says, "Compositionally, I think the room is scaled appropriately — there's room to move, I know what I'm supposed to do in here and the asymmetry is working organically for me."
White Dining Room With Green Curtains and Yellow Chairs
To spice up the decor, HGTV Star contestant Boris Eckey used a faux trellis paint pattern on one wall, hung custom artwork and added a classic extension dining table and unconventional seating, like bright yellow director's chairs. Now this Tuscan-style dining room feels like it's been part of the house forever.
Contemporary Green Dining Room With White Wainscoting
Natural light emphasizes the beauty of this dining room: the gleaming hardwood floor, the bright white wainscoting and crown molding, the light gray-green paint on the walls. The dark wood table holds court on a simple area rug, which is perfectly sized for the dining area.
An open plan kitchen moves seamlessly into this stylish dining room where a wood table and handsome brown leather dining chairs serve as a neutral backdrop for the forest green rug and sculptures. Overhead, the swoops and folds of the pendant light hover gracefully like a cloud.
