Small Room with Large Seating
While small furniture leaves more room for walking around in a small space, miniscule couches and chairs are rarely comfortable. So rather than place two pokey little loveseats in this 7x12-foot sitting room, designer Amie Weitzman built large seating banquettes into the blue-tweed-upholstered walls."This room is part of a guest suite," explains Weitzman, "So comfort was really the top priority." The sofas are deep enough to sink into and large enough to flop onto, "and building them right into the wall," Weitzman says, "buys you a few extra inches of floor space."
Even if you are using freestanding pieces in a small room, you can go with substantial furniture. "The one thing to make sure of," says Weiztman, "is that if you need to, you can walk around the furniture comfortably."
The home's large dining room has seating for eight, and, with a large window and a neutral wall to reflect the space's natural light. To add warmth and personality, designers brought in two sets of artwork behind glass. To complete the space, curtains were added to the windows to help control light and add color to the space.
The living area of this great room, tucked under a bank of 12-foot-tall windows, provides a stunning view of the desert landscape. Furnishings are toned down so all eyes focus on the glorious scenery just steps from the back patio. (From HGTV Dream Home 2010)

Large Kitchen Island with Seating for Four Replaces Formal Dining Room
This kitchen redesign, as featured on America's Most Desperate Kitchen, features new, ceiling height cabinets and a large kitchen island. The island is four feet deep, leaving plenty of space for storage, and twelve feel deep, adding an informal dining space which removed the need for a formal dining room, so designers incorporated the former dining room space into the kitchen to make it larger and more functional.
Design makes up for lack of square feet in this home. The tiny dining area features a thin white and metal table, matching white chairs, uniquely shaped pendulum light, and a large mirror. Whimsical artwork, glass accessories, and a simple flower arrangement add visual interest to the space.
Large Family Room Includes Comfortable Seating, Easy Access to Other Living Spaces
A large family room includes ample seating for hanging out together or watching TV. The room sits at the nexus of the open-plan kitchen and a game room with additional television and pool table. French doors lead to a balcony overlooking the home's swimming pool and spa.

This green great room sitting area features high ceilings with exposed beams, large picture windows with a view of the surrounding prairie and mountains, and comfortable leather seating in front of a stone fireplace.
Natural Light and Minimal Furniture Give Small Room Larger Feel
Like the living areas, the bedrooms make good use of the natural light that spills in from the beach. Though the room is small, the white color of the walls and ceiling help the space to appear larger with the help of the full length curtains and large windows. To keep the light, open feeling in the space, designers kept the furniture to a minimum, so as not to clutter the room.

The sofa is a key element in a living room’s design. It anchors the space and provides a place for the family or guests to come together. A matching red leather love seat helps define the room around the coffee table and facing the flatscreen television. Above the TV, large silver globes create a unique, 3D decorative element to draw the eye.

An extra high ceiling with an exposed beam design highlights the openness and grand size of this living room. A plush sofa and matching armchair feature a light neutral color tone and tufted backs.
