Whether you are renting or owning, in a city or town for one year or in a forever home, there is no reason you can't personalize and customize your space. Emily Henderson advises you "go into your attic or box of mementoes" for artwork and sculptural elements in your home in place of expensive, original artworks. "If it's two-dimension and means something to you, it can become a piece of art." The living room coffee table is a repurposed circus elephant stand painted with black spray paint, as is the etagere in the far corner. Circular forms that bring in a hip, Eighties vibe repeat in the couch and mantel mirror and peacock blue and natural wood side tables in the room to bring cohesion and purpose.
Dark hardwood flooring runs from the kitchen, with a large marble island and seating for six guests, to the blue, transitional living room. The white painted fireplace features a floating, wooden mantel and is the focal point in the space, surrounded with leather chairs and a comfy sofa positioned for family gatherings.
Tasked with fitting a washer and two dryers into this slim laundry room, designer RaeLynn Callaway of Classically Yours Interiors had limited space to add storage. She configured the cabinets to make the most of every inch, including open niches for bins and baskets. She also paid special attention to aesthetics, with lively green paint and corner cabinets that house art and accents. "I have realized that if you have a 'happy' laundry room you have a happy laundry person," Callaway says. Fun colors, cabinet hardware, flooring patterns and decor can really make a difference."
Midcentury Ranch Home Atop Grassy Hill With Stone Slabs
This midcentury ranch home sits on top of a hill, thus minimizing the view of structural roof items that would normally be visible. A large expanse of grass is broken up by large stones as well as a walkway made from large stone slabs.
The newly renovated home ultimately met all the criteria of homeowners Bill and Jody, including a wonderful and welcoming front porch that's large enough to accommodate a dining table and swinging porch bed.
