Lush Modern Patio with Recycled Granite
This once-bland courtyard now is a showcase for salvaged and recycled materials. The contemporary dining set rests upon bands of reclaimed granite slabs. Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design used blocks of granite salvaged from a 19th century building in Boston as benches in the courtyard, which won an Association of Professional Landscape Designers award.
Designed by Wagner Hodgson Landscape Architecture, a wood-burning fireplace was cast in place of concrete with a board-form finish. Its covered position protects it from the summer winds in its Vermont setting.
A custom bar wall unit graces the open layout for the entertainment areas including the living and dining areas. Wood lower cabinets contrast with the white walls and upper cabinets. Mirror was used as a backsplash to create a sense of depth and reflect the interior lighting. To the right, shelves, storage and an artwork display provide further function to the unit.
Contemporary Neutral Living Room with Gray Built-in Bookshelves
The original built-in bookcases flanking the fireplace were retained, echoing the arched detail found in the doors and entryways. The bookcases and trim are painted in ash gray, providing soft contrast with the newly painted white walls.
Contemporary Playroom Features Teepee & Chalkboard Paint Door
What kid wouldn't love his or her own teepee! Striking and bright colors create a lively environment for this fort-among-forts. Benches double as tables and pillows also work as seats. Kids have easy access to books on a nearby shelf, keeping them organized and not underfoot. A door covered with erasable chalkboard paint provides space for drawing over and over again.
Contemporary White Kitchen With Bold, Colorful Accents
Pops of cobalt blue and orange give this crisp white eat-in kitchen a fun, contemporary vibe. Exposed beams above create definition in the space which allow the modern starburst pendant lights above the classic island to act as a focal point in the space.
This inviting mid-century modern kitchen features a warm walnut kitchen island with a marble countertop, blue gray cabinets and a bold black-and-white tile backsplash. Pendant lights with brass accents hang above the island with four leather bar chairs.
Designer Gail Drury combined traditional sage-green accents and ivory cabinets, along with contemporary materials and conveniences, to bring an updated look and feel to this charming kitchen. An eclectic mix of wood finishes in the island and barstools further add to the kitchen's collected-over-time appeal.
The overall vision for this home's spaces was modern farmhouse, so designers chose a beautiful oak hardwood floor to run throughout the main areas of the house. Then, they brought in a lot of white and marble, helping to make the spaces feel timeless and classic. Finally, warmth was added to the home through gold and black accents and wood details that really brought the rustic farmhouse feel to life.
The brightly colored ceramic tiles add Mexican flair to this outdoor fireplace by Astleford Interiors. You could do the same thing indoors – and a similar approach, with Fiestaware-colored squares or a red-white-and-blue pattern for an American Country look.
Designers set this kitchen stage with a wash of pastels: pink walls and island, gray backsplash, white countertops. Then, for a playful edge, they layered bold pops of color on top; bright rugs, a blue door, pendants in sherbet shades bringing in so much fun.
Custom cabinets and a false stainless steel vent front neatly hide an HVAC duct that runs through this kitchen. For color, designers painted lower cabinetry a soft blue, then reupholstered budget-friendly barstools with cheery pink outdoor fabric.
