Outdoor Oasis; Lower Patio
Directly opposite of the fireplace are a set of steps that cascade down to the lower patio where the outdoor kitchen with bar seating and dining area are located. Note that the fireplace wall and the outdoor kitchen are clad in the same dark stone to distinguish them as balancing objects within the space. The remaining walls are clad in a lighter stone to match the home.
Unique to this backyard design was the 3.5’ wide by 17’ long water feature. Stainless steel insets were specially fabricated which then filled and tested for leaks at the yard. Any pin holes found were welded on site to ensure a water-tight container. The stainless steel container was then carefully transported to the job site and installed. The stone coping around the perimeter was mortared down to help keep the water feature in place as well as provide a seat wall.
This outdoor kitchen is adjacent to a new gravel patio with elevated vegetable gardens. This provides both better access to the garage as well as overflow space for entertaining. Another unique feature to this design was the paving material. The patios are laid with a 2’x4’ porcelain tile imported from Italy that had a 12-week lead time for delivery. The stairs had to be carefully designed and ordered because only the manufacturer could bullnose the edges of this material and maintain the proper color.
This elevated patio is grounded by a strong horizontal wall with a see-through fireplace on the east end. This element helps to highlight the large Palladian inspired window. A water element on the south side relates to the view of the river beyond at the lower level of the property.
All along the upper and lower levels, glass doors pull back to make the transition between indoors and out seamless. On the lower level, a large patio extends out beyond the house for ultimate outdoor entertaining.
An intimate stone patio enjoys front row seats to the changing foliage around this country home. Low-maintenance landscaping and a white picket fence frame the outdoor dining space, complete with a low-key patio set.
This lower level patio is a modern oasis perfect for entertaining or getting away from it all. Layers of foliage and trees offer privacy and add an organic element that softens strong geometric shapes in this streamlined space.
This aerial photograph shows the exquisitely landscaped gravel and concrete pathway that leads from the upper house to the lower outdoor spaces. The elegant outdoor spaces include a small pool with a flagstone patio and walkway that leads to a multi-functional outdoor entertaining space.
