For additional visual interest, the landscape architects outlined the backyard with a zig-zagging hedge of Bush Germander. The plant's light green hue complements the color of the hillside.

Part of the approval process for this small modern home included a required raised portion of the site dedicated to storm-water control and a sanitary system. To accommodate this requirement, a plinth was used raise the surface and was landscaped with a native grass.
Large stone pavers spaced throughout the grassy backyard create a contemporary, geometric walkway. Stacked stone archways lend an Old World feel to the home and line the covered patio. Ivy-covered columns and elegant landscaping add to the traditional atmosphere of the outdoor space.
An oversized, contemporary dining room chandelier features the same straight, modern planes as the surrounding architecture of this hillside house. A natural wood ceiling and rustic wood wall treatment provide organic elements that connect the interiors to the rugged outdoor landscape. Avocado chairs with clean, modern lines provide a pop of color in the mostly neutral dining space.
Add curves. One of the hallmarks of cottage landscaping is the movement away from rigid geometric garden beds and toward serpentine shapes. In this case, the arch of the gate leading into a secondary "outdoor room" echoes the curve of the garden beds. The use of plants rather than formal walls lends a cohesive feel to the entire space.
Since the architect wanted to create a modern Palladian design with the home, MESA set out to create landscaping that would complement the timeless look. Drawing from both modern and traditional landscaping architecture, they design an outdoor space that showcases crisp geometric lines with textured native plantings.
Tropical Pool With Fountains and Colorful Landscaping
A tile wall runs the length of this crystal-blue swimming pool adding color and including multiple fountains and planters. A built-in hot tub sits to the side of the pool next to a beautifully landscaped patio space with grass growing in a geometric design. A thriving area of flowers, palm trees and ornamental grasses lines the pool with bountiful color.
