Striped walls lend a chic vibe to this living room, which was converted from a garage. A pair of floral chairs provide pattern and a nice contrast to the neutral low-profile sofa. An area rug defines the sitting area, while windows in the garage door allow plenty of natural light to flow through the room.
Cool, Contemporary Living Space in Converted Garage

Contemporary Living Room With Neutral Stripes in Converted Garage

It’s hard to imagine now, but this charming living space was once an unassuming commercial garage. To make the most of the compact, 1,260-square-foot space (including an upstairs loft area), Frazier Associates minimized the number of walls within. Exposed brick walls and concrete flooring on the first floor were retained and a new staircase, crafted of reclaimed wood and metal railing, was designed for access to the second floor. "Providing more natural light was the biggest design challenge," say the designers. "A new recessed patio was designed behind the historic garage doors to allow for more light on the first floor, as well as to create a front entrance and a small exterior seating area."

In sunny Florida, there’s often no need to keep the car inside the garage—which leaves this space open for creative conversion. Here, the team at B + G Design transformed a Miami garage into a luxurious home theater, complete with upholstered seating, dramatic lighting and colorful artwork to brighten the space when there’s nothing on screen.
Licensed contractor Chip Wade of HGTV's Elbow Room converts a barn into a large open great room with soaring ceilings. Green-striped chairs and a white sofa bring a contemporary element to the space, while the stone fireplace and paneled walls preserve the history of the barn.
Although most of the church was destroyed in a fire in 1986, the building has since been beautifully restored. One of five townhouses in the converted space, this unit offers a whopping 4,250 square feet spread over three stories.
Natural elements, like a petrified wood coffee table, bowl and side table, mix with contemporary details, like abstract art and simple furniture, in this open concept living room. A turquoise blue accent wall makes a bold statement.
