Young newlyweds were looking to transform their home into a chic, sophisticated space for both relaxation and entertaining friends and family.
The renovations were all about creating spaces for entertaining. The compartmentalized main living spaces were opened up with the help of a structural engineer. A bearing wall and two outdated columns were replaced by steel beams that fit into the ceiling system above, and the structural work continued all the way down to the footers in the basement. Designer Heather Garrett and her team worked decorative moulding around the new ceiling beams to make it appear as if they were always part of the home.
This lodge inspired living room is a unique space, perfect for entertaining. Floor to ceiling wood makes the space feel warm, like a hunting lodge, but large windows bring in plenty of natural light, making the space feel brighter. Furniture with darker colors and textures, such as leather and wood, blend with pieces like the ceiling fan and light fixtures to make the space masculine, yet sophisticated.
From dreary and dated to calm and sophisticated, designers restored the neoclassical plaster work in the living room to reveal a luxurious, yet comfortable space. They removed the old fireplace that was dark and too heavy for the space and replaced it with a monolithic slab of real marble and a fully functioning fireplace that is light and inviting. The room’s lower ceiling lends the space an intimate feel that is enhanced by the absence of a television, putting the emphasis in this space on face-to-face family time.
The living room marries classic and contemporary design — a place where the homeowners could enjoy entertaining their friends, family and business associates. A monochromatic color scheme accented with soft blues and copper achieves the desired contemporary style, while the traditional element comes from taking full advantage of the restored building’s wood paneled walls and architectural details.
An elegant neutral color palette is punctuated by rich browns and dark blues to create a traditional living room. Bay windows are dressed in soft gray curtains, while a coffered ceiling adds beautiful architectural details.
