Fixer Upper Host Joanna Gaines decided to surprise Becky and Heath by transforming the once awkward atrium into an open-air herb garden. Located right off the kitchen and dining area, the courtyard is a perfect place to entertain; a fragrant herb garden makes prepping delicious meals easy.
Open Floor Plan Helps Add Functionality and Flow to Modern Spaces
From the sofas in the living room, homeowners and guests have a clear line of sight to the kitchen with an eat-in island, thanks to this home's open floor plan. This gives the home's public spaces an elegant flow that makes these rooms functional.
Pillows and Ottoman Add Pops of Color to This Bright Space
As sunlight pours into this sophisticated, modern living room, light is reflected of the white surfaces of the walls, cabinets and sofas to create a bright, light atmosphere. To give the space some color, designers added throw pillows to make the couches pop. The main feature in this living space, though, is the cushioned teal ottoman that mixes in a little traditional style with a modern twist. The ottoman not only functions as a cushy coffee table, it doubles as extra seating when the homeowners entertain.
Modern Kitchen with Elegant Cabinets and a Large Island
Just off the living area, the home boasts a separate dining area perfect for entertaining. As guests leave the dining area, they enter an elegant, modern kitchen. Here, homeowners have plenty of counter space to prepare and serve meals on state of the art, stainless steel appliances. Storage needs are met, by a plethora of modern cabinetry, and the space is lit by natural light, with the aid of pendant lighting, creating an elegant, modern atmosphere.
Multifunctional Kitchen Island Provides Counter Space and Seating for Five
To give the homeowners much-needed space for entertaining, designers installed a large kitchen island that has enough seating for at least five guests. Not only does this space provide seating, it also gives the homeowners extra counter space for easy meal preparation, since there is direct access to the home's double ovens, microwave, refrigerator and stove from the kitchen island, which also contains a large prep sink for simple kitchen cleanup.
Now you're ready to place the cut pallet boards into the spaces on the potting bench top. Use a brad nailer and 1-3⁄8" brads to secure them. "You could use 1-1⁄4" screws instead," Lamb says. "Accessorize your potting bench with hooks for garden tools, gloves, towels, and a bottle opener. Finish and protect the potting bench with a clear sealer made for outdoor use." Your bench can double as a gardening space or a buffet when you're entertaining. "(It) doesn’t have to go outdoors if you have more use for it indoors—it looks great in a kitchen or entryway.”

The dining room is one of the designer's favorite rooms in the house. Becky Shea Design came up with the dining table and light fixtures. Pulls on both ends of the table extend it to include eight more people.
In the dining room, a custom-designed dining table features pulls on either end. When the table is expanded, live edge extensions are placed on top. Becky Shea, the designer of the room and the table, likes that this approach "avoids too much machinery and lets the wood do its thing."
