This elegant yet inviting master bedroom is a treat for restful eyes, as designer Heather McManus dips her brush in tones of gold. The soft-hued area rug, ornate draperies and upholstered furnishings polish the more simple designs of the sleigh bed and nightstand. The star attraction of the space, however, is the softly painted border of the tray ceiling, in a French design, that gives the room depth and drama.
The wet room creates a spa like feel to this master bath. Carrera Marble in varying sizes and formats create continuity and interest. The Bain Ultra tub and multiple showerheads add to the message of pure relaxation. The yellow barn door separates the bath from the bedroom. The color palette continues into the bedroom with yellow and white Grange Hermitage Clover Leaf Chests on either side of the upholstered A Rudin bed.
A darker, earthy green was selected for the walls in this room and a new rattan pendant replaced the old ceiling fan for a decorative touch. Two nightstands and a bench that was reupholstered in a kiwi green suede were added alongside a wood bed and 6-drawer dresser. A few shimmery art pieces add a little sparkle around the room and offset the earthy, natural feeling in the other pieces.
This neutral kid's room proves that a space doesn't have to be colorful to be fun and playful. Built-in cabinets flank both sides of the bed, creating functional and stylish bedside tables. An upholstered headboard with two rows of nailhead trim is custom-built to fit the space, and reading lights above are a practical addition. Dinosaur-printed bedding and a pair of acid green pillows bring punch and kid-friendly flair.
This green kid's room features twin beds fashioned from repurposed pieces of pine, poplar and plywood with headboards upholstered in durable, solution-dyed acrylic fabric. A parson chair wrapped in kiwi-colored leather and a wingback chair covered in retro poolside-inspired outdoor fabric carve out the room's reading areas.
This craftsman style master bathroom features an olive green and neutral color palette that works really well together. A hanging lantern over the bed is an unexpected but stylish addition while walls painted with Valspar Withered Moss create a restful backdrop. A simple painted nightstand and long table showcase the rustic metal lamps and artwork through out the room. A brown throw rug coordinates well with the wood floor, curtains, and existing upholstered bedroom furniture.
In sunny Florida, there’s often no need to keep the car inside the garage—which leaves this space open for creative conversion. Here, the team at B + G Design transformed a Miami garage into a luxurious home theater, complete with upholstered seating, dramatic lighting and colorful artwork to brighten the space when there’s nothing on screen.
Allison says that the bedrooms in her family's 2,400 square foot home are relatively modest. "The beauty of the space is it's little bedrooms and big living space," so that family and friends are encouraged to gather in the open-plan, public areas of the home. A neutral palette of white in the master bedroom makes the perfect backdrop for a large oil painting and colorful upholstered headboard. Chief, the Australian labradoodle commands center stage on the bed.
This functional but colorful guest bedroom can manage several overnight guests or a small family with ease. The room features two daybeds placed side by side, each upholstered in simple, solid blue fabric, and two double beds with plaid bedding. Designer Susan Brunstrum painted the walls a sunny yellow color for a fresh look.
In Chris' bedroom, a mix of high and low created his designer bed ensemble. A custom bed upholstered in automotive vinyl was the area's biggest purchase; however, deceptively budget-friendly purchases were made for the remainder of the space. The demilune-shaped chests came from ZGallerie for $600 each, and not only do they add an elegant touch, they offer concealed storage. Table lamps atop the chests were found at a flea market and updated with red paint and new metallic drum shades. While Ralph Lauren bedding in a classic paisley print was a splurge, custom pillows made from $6.99 per yard IKEA tartan fabric kept the budget in check. To allow Chris to easily change up the looks of his bedding, the backs of each pillow were covered in a nautical print from Duralee.
Transitional design is best described as a mix of modern and traditional and it tends to work well with many other styles. The wingback chair used in the bedroom is upholstered in pinstripe wool and adorned with antique brass nail heads. The clean lines of the fabric give the otherwise traditional piece of furniture a clean, modern-day update.
Who needs a dedicated formal dining room when an open plan kitchen can serve all functional purposes? “Fresh and serene was our vision for this bedroom in the Bahamas,” say designers Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl. “To fit the girls’ two full-size beds in the smallish space, they had to be close together. The solution: one long custom headboard, upholstered in a cotton-linen-blend fabric. Blush pink — always an Insta favorite! — supersoft blankets with fringe, and a fluffy shag rug complete the cozy.”
Good design is an often-overlooked but crucial aspect of having a home office especially with so many of us spending time working from home these days. A good layout for the space can not only keep you organized, but keep you energized and engaged. And if you use your office to meet current or prospective clients, it can help to make an impression. This office is designed to give the blend the best parts of work and home — comfort and organization — seamlessly.
