Forget plain old paintings and sketches -- the art in this teen's room is a unique combination of antique tennis racquets and an oversized metal initial. Nestling a desk against a wall is a smart way to make the most of a low, sloped ceiling — it's just the right height to sit but not stand. The desk is also built around a radiator, a strategy for keeping the old home's original elements in tact. Jewel-toned accents make the teen room feel a little more grown-up.

"We sold our big house with a bonus room 15 years ago so that we could afford to start over and do what we love for a living," says designer Christina Britt Lewis of The Redesign Company. "This is a choice we never regret, but we make big boys and they have big friends. When they needed more space, we redesigned our garage. We used what we already had—a ping pong table we bartered for, the twin beds our teenage boys had outgrown for seating—and saved by considering it a three-season space and not installing heat or air conditioning. We hung trail maps of mountains we have conquered and set lists from concerts we loved in cheap frames for 'art' that brings back fun family memories."
Having a daybed can still bring elegance to a room. This white daybed enhances the look of the black velvet bedding and toile-pattern pillows and bed skirt. A bold red wall and fashionista-inspired artwork complete the look. Design by HGTV fan d_fish.
