Layered blues are prominent in the master bedroom's seating area. From the navy blue of the draperies and the teal tone of the console table to the blue-violets and peacock blues of the chair upholstery and pillows, this layering effect adds depth and keeps the otherwise tone-on-tone color scheme from falling flat.
The vision for the space was to create a livable, functional space for the homeowners. Their love for modern design paired perfectly with the quaint cottage architecture and geography of the home. By removing the one wall in the space that used to define the kitchen, the designers were able to open the floor plan up and include a breakfast bar lined with teal barstools.
On the opposite side of the playroom, another set of original wood doors opens to reveal a sitting room that is swathed in the same bold teal as the playroom. In this space, a window provides natural light, while brightly colored pillows add splashes of color, and unique details, such as the fur rug and cattle skull on the wall create a stylish, eclectic space.
This country music rising star wanted a place to write her number ones, so designers took inspiration from music city itself. One the walls, Nashville concert posters are hung, along with an autographed guitar. Vintage items, such as a pink vintage record player and transistor radio, mix with more modern elements, such as the large teal chairs, to combine a space that is both cozy and creative.
Subtle and feminine was the design goal for this elegant little girl's room. The muted pink walls anchor the space, while the gray patterned bedspread adds warmth and texture to the space. For color and personality, designers brought in a teal and pink rug with antiqued furniture to create a fun, yet sophisticated room for this little girl to enjoy now as well as grow into.
To add a pop of color, we wrapped the outer frame with bright teal ribbon. This allowed us to cover the existing black wrapping that was cracked and fading. This can be a bit time consuming, but it adds so much to the final look of the chair.
Tri-level decks make the most of this California home's outdoor space while adding living area for a modern family. Sliding glass doors on the top floor, pocket doors in the center and a roll-up garage door at ground level are flexible and fit with the home's unique, modern architecture. The bold pink, yellow and teal color palette reflects the fun personality of the owners.
This funky kitchen and dining space features a rustic wood cabinet framed by a white built-in sideboard and vibrant red tile accent wall. These pieces were arranged in a slanted line on a blank white wall behind the glass and metal dining table and teal dining chairs, all of which create a deliberate, stylized effect in the room. The large island in this loft kitchen isn't only a place to eat, it offers valuable storage space. By removing doors and adding millwork, the island now has a mix of open and concealed storage. The island's black and white color scheme is nicely contrasted by the copper pendant lights above and the teal front door.
The wall between the kitchen and living room is long gone, and a new, black iron retaining wall with gridded windows now defines the space between the kitchen and the foyer in an inviting way. "That wall is like, Let's get on the other side of it!," Joanna said. New hardwood floors, a massive new kitchen island, a teal backsplash and opulent new brass pendant lights complete the kitchen's transformation.
Design-wise, former HGTV Design Star contestant Tera stands by her motto "taking what you have and making it better," but she has grown a little more daring. "I'm definitely more open now to bringing in color and a more contemporary style in my design and staging business," she says, a shift illustrated in this colorful teal blue bedroom with black and white accents.

The renovation of this Nashville, TN kitchen began with opening up the claustrophobic floor plan and adding a large island for the young family to live and work around. Then, designers added a neutral color palette with pops of color from the kitchen ware and vinyl teal counter stools. Finally, doors were painted black to add some drama and architectural interest to a space that lacked both things before the renovation.
The secret to a successful modern apartment is plenty of storage. The built-in cabinets stretch from the dining room to the living room to maximize storage and enhance both spaces. The recessed section on the living room side enlarges the space at seating level while creating end tables and a serving counter. Yellow and pale teal accent the seating area, and a zebra-print rug provides a statement piece.
