The homeowners wanted raised beds where they could plant annuals, vegetables, herbs and succulents, so designers added a series of steel planters to meet their needs. Since the space is visually connected to home office, the homeowners can enjoy the lovely view of their home grown goodies while they work.
Beds of flowering plants are interrupted by a steel planter, creating dynamic textures and patterns that earn this design at Yard, a project by 2.ink Studio an ASLA 2018 Honor Award in the residential design category. This functional feature manages stormwater runoff for this rooftop garden in Portland, Oregon.
This custom project was built as the clients' "forever home." The uniquely designed entry system leads the visitor to four separate landings as the stairs wind around and turn from concrete to "floating steel" stairs towards the top. The concrete was formed to give it a unique detail, and there are two integrated planters along the way up as well. Inside, the home offers a three-stop elevator, two-sided fireplace, 26' exposed steel I-beam, spa-like master bath and hand fabricated custom perforated steel handrails.
There’s no shortage of planters available, in just about any size and style you might need. But if you’re working in a contemporary or urban setting, or if you want to create your own “wall” of privacy plantings, simple, rectilinear styles may work best. Blox Rectangular Galvanized Charcoal Planters, $49.95 to $69.95 from CB2, are made of matte-finished galvanized steel, for a sleek but industrial look.
Stairways—both concrete and corten steel—connect this terraced backyard. All around the stairs are a graceful mix of perennials and grasses, with planters helping to soften the transition between levels.
A self-latching steel gate creates an eye-catching entrance to this modern courtyard. The 300-pound gate spans the space between the 60-inch tall concrete wall. The gate, which was custom fabricated by Dennis Schleder, matches the modern rustic style of the planter box and courtyard within.
This ipe deck features a custom powder-coated steel planter and native and drought-resistant perennials and shrubs. Two wooden lounge chairs with light blue cushions sit atop the deck, providing a cozy spot for relaxation.
This modern trough-style planter can be placed in gardens, and along driveways and walkways to grow flowers, herbs and vegetables. The raised planter, made of Zincalume steel and sold by Gardener's Supply, is 15 inches high.
