Clever shoe storage tucked beneath the stairway maximizes space in this traditional Brooklyn, N.Y., townhouse. Dark-stained stair treads and a dark handrail offer pleasing contrast against the crisp bright white trim.
Another clever place to hide equipment is below your deck's staircase, the way Land Art Design did here. This hideaway functions as a tool shed that can handle taller equipment, and it doesn't take up any of your precious yard space.
Wanting to give the homeowners' service dog, Rescue, a space of his own, the designer transformed the dead space beneath the stairs into a private, puppy-friendly alcove. Built-in storage allows for stocking treats and toys, while a buffet table down the hall displays the owners' personal mementos.
Tamara Hubinsky’s mission for this design was to create a hideout for the 9-year-old boy that would still accommodate him as he matured. The bookshelf stairs were custom designed to provide storage and utilize precious bedroom space. The stairs also add structure to the loft bed, which is important for kids’ rooms that are subject to lots of movement and heavy use. Small stair carpet treads (in a stone, riverbed pattern) add comfort and safety.
Thick wood posts support the handrail lining the staircase in this open foyer. Traditional white wainscoting carries from the foyer up the staircase. A gold buffet is tucked into a nook on the first floor, adding a beautiful gold accent and stylish storage space.
Let’s face it, there’s no such thing as too much storage. Grab unused space anywhere you can, such as under the stairs. Make it a catch-all closet to hold extra food, cleaning supplies and small appliances.
A step up in book storage, these Japanese-inspired “Tansu Stairs” were designed by Steven Ehrlich, FAIA - Ehrlich Architects and hand crafted by David Albert. They’re set in a sustainable residence just one kilometer from the Pacific Ocean, and are built to reflect the bohemian spirit of Venice, Calif. A staircase bookcase is a great space saver in a home like this one, built on a narrow lot.
