A teak handrail and horizontal cable rails fit in with the urban environment of a contemporary Manhattan townhouse garden and terrace space. It's part of an overall project by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects in Charlottesville, Va., which won an American Society of Landscape Designers award.
A custom metal and wood stair rail echoes the industrial accents found throughout the great room and dining room. The strong lines of the railing add texture and stand out against the whitewashed wood floors and vaulted white ceilings.
Black steel pickets contrast with the pressure-treated pine selected for a set of stairs extending from a screened back porch to the yard. Innovative Construction, based in Roswell, Ga., designed the outdoor living space and stairs.
A tan wall complements the dark hardwood floor that moves through this contemporary hallway. A long, thin mirror with a textured frame is a simple, stylish touch. The stairway is lined with a glass and stainless steel railing for a sleek look.
