This wooden staircase doesn't need embellishments to make it beautiful. Vertical and horizontal natural wooden boards make up the walls and the stairs' foundation. Stained wood for the stairs and railing create a beautiful contrast. The layered railing creates a smooth and effective support for moving floor to floor.
A teak handrail and horizontal cable rails fit in with the urban environment of a contemporary Manhattan townhouse garden and terrace space. It's part of an overall project by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects in Charlottesville, Va., which won an American Society of Landscape Designers award.
Can you believe these tasteful stairs were once orange? To transform them, the designer sanded the handrails and stained them with a dark walnut stain. Stairs and spindles got a coat of fresh paint, Benjamin Moore Simply White, that matches the hallway walls.
Unfortunately, the condition of the original stairs was such that the stairs themselves could not be repaired, but the original configuration was kept intact and the original curved handrail was able to be salvaged. The new iron railing was "built around" the original banister.
Hints of purple, gray and black pop out from the stair runner complimenting the gray walls and the first floor rug. A tufted bench pulls out the purple for a rich accent color in the foyer. Wooden handrails and columns travel up and turn with the staircase at the accent wall covered in a subtly patterned gray wallpaper.
The designers created a more open and inviting landing to the lower level of the home. A custom railing on the existing stairs allows light from the main floor to drift downstairs. Powder-coated metal pairs with a white oak handrail.
A vintage light fixture fills the open space to add subtle decor over the stairs in this hall. The handrail and newel caps compliment the hardwood floor coloring leaving the white balusters looking bright between the wood details. A classic, small sofa and framed mirror fit the simple and sophisticated style.
Glass panels keep the room looking and feeling open while offering secure travel up this staircase. The natural look of the wood stairs blends beautifully with the light hardwood flooring. A black handrail and stainless steel sconce complete the modern design.
