Master bedroom in soothing tones of pale blue and white on a neutral background. Relax and read in patterned upholstered armchairs with your feet propped up on a round blue ottoman. Sleep in four-poster wooden bed with blue and white linens. The dressers are white with silver detail topped with bedside lamps of pale blue bases and white shades. A bench with silver base and neutral cushion sits at the end of the bed.
After white and natural wood, gray is the most popular finish for kitchen cabinets, but this is one trendy color that’s not at risk of going out of style. “Muted colors are soothing and easy to live with, and a signature of my work,” says designer Angela Free. “This home is located in the foggy San Francisco Marina district and the neutral yet rich palette allows for a seamless flow between the indoors and outdoors.”
Blues take center stage in this classy living room, from the velvety sofas to the patterned pillows and even the coffee table books. Of course, there's no missing the zebra print sofa, which really livens up the soothing space. A flokati rug brings in a splash of whimsy, which is tempered by a clean-lined, contemporary coffee table. Flowering branches bring nature in and provide the crowning design touch to the space.
Also known as German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), this is the happy flower that yields a soothing tea. Give plants a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Harvest blooms when fully open, and dry for the most concentrated flavor. For tea, steep 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers in 1 cup of boiling water. If using freshly harvested flowers, plan on twice the amount.
Placed under a large window that allows natural light inside with patterned roman shades and a one-light wall sconce on each side, the white freestanding tub with center drain includes an ergonomic design and heated surface with three heat settings for soothing warmth on your back, neck and shoulders. “The freestanding tub gives the bathroom a bit more elegance than a built-in tub,” says project manager Scott Branscom.
Throughout the home's space, designer pulled in bold colors to create the fun, eclectic space that the homeowners desired. The master bathroom is no exception, but to create a more soothing space, designers scaled back the multiple colors from the rest of the home and complemented the bold, blue painting that hangs above the soaking tub with rich wood and tile textures, creating a space that is as vibrant as the couple, but that gives them a private space to relax.
This spacious master suite soothes with soft hues of blue and white, making it the perfect oasis after a stressful day. The low-slung platform bed and abstract prints animate the space with contemporary flair.
This lovely girls bedroom is a soothing space perfect for any little girl. Blue and pink pillows and bed linens compliment the light blue wall and blue and white patterned floor. A pink floral glass chandelier highlights the pink ceiling, providing a lovely contrast to the rest of the space. Oversized windows with simple lace curtains allow plenty of natural light. A yellow nightstand brings in a pop of color and serves as an excellent space for a unique sculptured figurine bed lamp.
Designer tips can work in any kitchen. Just ask designer Egypt Sherrod, who installed these creative table trays as great wall decor for this simple kitchen she helped design for Dwell with Dignity, a nonprofit group working to create soothing, inspiring homes for families struggling with homelessness and poverty. Inexpensive trays, which can be found at stores like HomeGoods and Pier 1, make for interesting wall art and go with the universal theme of eating and entertaining that is the heart of every kitchen.

From the moment he stepped into his new home, Mikel liked what he saw and knew what he wanted to do. The designer remembers that the unit had just been renovated and had everything he needed to create the space he wanted. With a fresh clean slate, he set out to create his perfect aesthetic - bringing the look and feel of his favorite Hamptons getaways to his own home. Combining different textures in a soothing, neutral color palette, the living room embodies the warm, rustic feel that the he wanted to come home to every day.
Being a successful entrepreneur is no small task, but that doesn’t mean that it requires a large space. With just her laptop and the help of the soothing color palette her office provides, Kalyn keeps everything running smoothly. Much like the clean white palette of the office itself, extending the desk from the shelving unit reduces the degree to which the office encroaches into the living room. Stylish turns like the whimsical legs of the desk add some interest to the nearly all-white space while acting as a contrast to the more industrial look of the living room.
All you need for your own personal home library or reading nook is a good bookshelf and a spot for a comfortable armchair. This reading spot makes use of a spot beneath a staircase that would otherwise be wasted. The back of the built-in bookcase is lined with removable wallpaper to give a pop of contrast to the moody green walls painted in Sherwin-Williams Country Squire. The nook includes an arc lamp to provide task lighting for reading and a small side table to hold a beverage, a soothing candle or the current book club book.
For smaller, more intimate gatherings, designers set up a sitting room to create a stylish conversation space. Light blues and neutral tones create a soothing feeling in the space, while a window allows in natural light, which reflects off the mirror wall and the other three white walls, making the space feel brighter and more inviting. A fireplace provides warmth to the space, highlighting the vignette designers created in the room with four, plush armchairs and a tufted ottoman to keep the homeowners and their guests comfortable in this space.
To create this soothing area of the room, designers used items that the homeowners currently owned or were given to add a frugal touch to this area of the nursery. Two vintage trunks, used as storage for the abundance of baby items, are stacked to create a side table as well as help create the travel theme. The comfortable glider, a gift for the parents to be, adds a soft place for middle of the night wake ups and afternoon readings, while chalk trays keep books at arm's length, creating a chic space for feeding and reading.
Gray, white and black elements create a living room that is at once formal and soothingly comfortable. The large, bay window commands the space, bringing green and life into the space. Multiple seating areas -- including a fabulous, built-in bench below the window -- allow many guest and family members to enjoy the room together.
This is one of my favorite master bedrooms of all time. It immediately reads as a luxury destination. This was the last space we designed in our original scope of work and I wanted everything we chose to have as much tactile appeal as it did visually. Wherever you land, you’ll sink down into lush velvets, silks, furs or mohair. The color palette is small but soothing, varying from dark chocolates to taupes with dashes of white to keep it crisp and reflect light. We used a faux silk wallcovering in the bedroom’s entry and on the bed wall, but conserved by using a perfect color-matched paint on the walls adjacent. I know it may seem a little indulgent but whenever you can, try adding fresh flowers or an orchid in your bedroom: instant hotel suite status!
