Designer Cindy Aplanalp wanted to create an outdoor space that matches the home's existing structure and accentuates its warm Mediterranean feel. Adjacent to the dining area, the outdoor kitchen is complete with a gas rotisserie grill, smoker, secondary gas burner and refrigerator -- ideal for preparing family meals or hosting parties, Cindy says.
A modern grilling space by Word + Carr Design Group, complemented by purple and green foliage, intersects beauty and function. The wood and steel bench holds a smoker while the wood retaining wall adds refinement to the native vegetation of Austin, Texas, earning this structure the ASLA 2018 Award of Excellence in residential design category.

A pair of modern chaise lounges fit with the simplicity of this midcentury modern-inspired ranch home. White walls and simple sheer draperies give the room a clean, airy feel. Oil-finished, smoked oak floors are organic yet sophisticated.
This garden's palette was inspired by house's exterior. Paths invite exploration through the various edible plants. Garden beds on either side of the walkway were raised slightly, then planted with purple smoke bush and silver olive trees to give the residents more privacy.
