Previously, the eat-in portion of this kitchen contained and old, outdated breakfast nook with banquettes. The homeowners loved this unique addition to their space, but it was in desperate need of updating, so designers scaled back the walls to create a larger space for the nook, then they modernized it with a bright wall color, silver leather covering on the banquettes, a modern table and a red, modern chandelier to match the walls. To help light the space, designers added double hung windows to let in plenty of natural light, making the space, bright, warm and inviting.
Banquette seating wraps around a round wood table in this colorful contemporary basement dining room. Bright blocks of color in silver frames pop a against a pale blue wall accented by a blue ceiling lamp.
The master bedroom is a showplace for custom furnishings. From the built-in banquette to the bedding, all the furniture and upholstery is custom designed for this room. Silver leaf on the pop-up ceiling adds a note of glam, while a long upholstered headboard grounds the bed and makes a dramatic statement. Automated shades are controlled by a Lutron panel built into the side of the nightstand.
"The idea in this space was to conceal an ugly kitchen vent and create a focal point above the banquette, so I designed a modern version of a shoji screen. To make it more personal, I took words from an Arabic prayer the homeowner learned as a child and stenciled them on the Plexiglas using silver paint," says Betty Wasserman, owner and designer, Betty Wasserman Art and Interiors, Ltd., New York City, NY.
