"Every view faces a garden," says Danielle Rollins of the way she has constructed her Atlanta backyard garden. Rollins' swimming pool is a centerpiece of her garden, where she swims most mornings, stages parties (or impromptu swimming after-parties, for which she keeps a collection of suits on hand) and even uses it for team-building with her staff. "It's been our official bonding space," she says. Her only regret is not installing more lights in her heated pool for nighttime swims.
Designers were careful to blend the indoor and outdoor spaces by taking advantage of sight lines from the home's interior design. The plants in the front courtyard and the back yard can be seen from the living room, kitchen, bedroom and hallways. Here, a sculptural cactus provides a backdrop for art inside the home.
The sight lines of this dining room, created by the edge of the kitchen cabinets and the perimeter of the contemporary kitchen table that seats six draw the eye to the large windows at the rear of the space that connect the indoor spaces with the outdoor areas.
Glass walls fully retract to open the living and dining spaces of this modern home to its natural outdoor setting. The hillside views are rugged and natural, and organic interior elements help connect the indoor and outdoor vistas. Clean lined, modern furniture fits with the clean, geometric planes of the architecture. Meanwhile, the open-concept plan keeps the sight lines open and clear.
On the opposite side of the sitting room, a dining room completes the home's functional set up. The open plan kitchen flows into the sitting room, giving those in the kitchen a clear connection with those in the sitting room. Then, once the food is prepared, a clear pathway is established from the kitchen through the sitting room and into the dining room.
With the wall that separated the kitchen and living room areas removed, the hosts now have a clear line of sight from one space into the other. This allows them to be prepping food in the kitchen while still remaining a part of the conversation in the living room.
