Design Tip: do not be scared of planting English Roses close to the edge of the path or seat where they may spill over. Their proximity makes it all the better for appreciating the beautiful flowers and delicious fragrances. Michael Marriott, technical manager and senior rosarian of David Austin Roses.
Upward-facing blooms give the Gold Collection of hellebores, including Pink Frost, a special beauty. Flowers appear from mid- to late winter, and blossom bracts linger well into spring. Pink Frost features shades of pink, rose, blush and white, which pairs beautifully with burgundy stems. Deer-resistant plants grow 12 to 15 inches tall by 24 inches wide. Hardy in Zones 5-9.
David Austin's 'Harlow Carr' has medium-sized, purest rose-pink flowers of the most perfect formation. It is one of the most fragrant English Roses, with a strong Old Rose scent. It is a tough, healthy variety that performs well in hotter areas, while also doing well where winters are cold. It is an excellent repeat bloomer, covered with flowers from early summer through late fall. Grows to 4 ft tall by 3 ft wide. (David Austin 2004, Aushouse).
Unlike most hellebores, or Lenten roses, Gold Collection® ‘Pink Frost’ holds its blooms upright, so their white, pink and deep rose colors are easier to see in winter. The plants have attractive burgundy stems. Use these deer resistant plants as groundcovers or perennials in shady spots.
'Constance Spry' was the first English Rose introduced by David Austin and is still widely grown today. It produces magnificent, pure rose pink, deeply-cupped blooms of luminous delicacy. It has a strong myrrh fragrance; in fact, it was this rose that introduced the myrrh fragrance to the English Roses. Unlike later English Roses which repeat bloom all season, 'Constance Spry' flowers once, in early summer. The growth is very strong with large leaves and many thorns. Color: deep pink. Flower: double/full bloom. Fragrance: strong myrrh. Grows to 12 ft as a climber. RHS "Award of Garden Merit."
