A void left, perhaps, by the removal of a fireplace, created an opportunity. The ideal place for a super-sized shadow box, the space was repurposed to display a found object soldier to give this guest room its required dose of funkiness.
HGTV Star contestant Boris Eckey and his team gave the new dining room a brand-new roof, matching floors and beams, an eight-foot sliding-glass door and archways to create the look of an Italian oasis.
An uninspired storage space was transformed into an elegant sitting room at the San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2014. An alluring art deco carving circa 1928 surrounds the tufted alcove. The jewel-toned color palette adds an exotic edge to the room.
A bright-colored bed is nestled neatly in a small nook with a gold chandelier. Gray and white accent pillows on the bed complement the bold-patterned wallpaper. Patterned bedding in a mustard color offsets the neutrals in the space and provides a pop of color to bring life to this small space.
Corbel brackets and Victorian, square section pilasters help to frame this working kitchen alcove.
In order to try and make the traditional brackets and room screens a little more modern, the sizes and proportions were exaggerated.
An in-room wet bar with a penny tile backsplash is a convenient touch to the HGTv Smart Home 2015 master bedroom. “By using a remote control, the area where the coffee maker is can lift up to reveal a shelf beneath the coffee maker where we have staged a martini maker and cocktail utensils.,” explains house planner Jack Thomasson. “It’s really cool, because it converts from a coffee maker area to a fun, kind of kitschy smart feature.”
A mix of materials—wood, velvet, silk—add luxurious texture to this bedroom, an easy way to keep the neutral palette interesting as well as serene. Along the edge of the room, a circular alcove hidden by curtains makes an attractive retreat.
Because the home's floor plan is so open, the designers used area rugs to delineate the living room, alcove and kitchen. Here, a large blue rug outlines the sitting area, which comes with two neutral sofas, two purple armchairs and a light wood coffee table.
A Byzantine-style alcove, the conversation room is crowned with an 18-foot-high central dome that is decorated with a floral hand-painted gold and blue design in 24k gold-leaf modeled after the church of St. John Lateran in Rome.
