Outdoor living is more fun in the thoughtfully designed backyard of HGTV Smart Home 2019. From dinner and a movie to watching a summer storm from the covered outdoor living room, this backyard brings the comforts of home into modern outdoor living.
Grant's bedroom is a tribute to comics and features more of Julianne's skill with washi tape design. She created the pattern on his bedroom walls and used quirky details like the vintage sconces flanking Grant's bed and a space age overhead fixture to give this room real graphic punch.
The living room exemplifies several of Rayman's unique design superpowers. In this one room he shows off a unique color palette in the gray, green and yellow of the walls and rug, married to a bold use of pattern on the sofa. His incorporation of artwork — especially photography — is a nice finishing touch. Holding it all together are subtle design tricks like the repetition of an animal motif in the leopard pillow and the tiger rug.
"All of the redesigned spaces are beautiful," Naomi says when describing the home, but confesses that one room was her favorite. "The master bath is a really unique and special room," she says. "We made functional use of the natural light coming in by mounting vanity mirrors in the windows, and the shower is its own separate 'room' with a large picture window to let in light." The custom vanities and built-ins all around the room make this a bespoke elegant space.
When you design outdoors you can use plants and trees as your statement decor. The Gilkesons wisely worked with the existing trees including a gorgeous crape myrtle which provides a striking, natural punctuation point in the walled garden. You can tell designers are at work here: the fabric colors on outdoor furniture perfectly coordinate with the caladium in a vibrant blue pot.
In a full renovation, designing a new kitchen can be one of the biggest challenges. It’s impressive then that Breegan points to it as one of the easiest parts of her remodel journey. “It wasn’t that the kitchen would be better than any other project,” she remembers, “I just knew I was not going to keep any elements of the old kitchen.” Fortunately, she had something better in mind. The white cabinetry fits seamlessly with marble flowing from countertop to wall. Breegan’s love of metallics is on full display in the kitchen accenting an amazing black oven range. Best of all, the gold range hood that sits overhead is a statement piece in the room. No surprise then that it was all part of the plan from the beginning. “It was the part of the home I saw most clearly in my mind’s eye when I entered the room.”
The blue bedroom at Smithfield continues its theme in a selection of blue-spined tomes. The fireplace is cleverly filled with an assortment of books in one of the home's typically witty design touches.
This home is an amazing insight into the world of a truly creative couple. Like their work, this Atlanta couple's home is a labor of love. “What we love most about our home is that it's beautiful and functional. It's a really comfortable place for us to relax and unwind, which is what we need most out of our home space," says Michelle Norris.
