In the dining room doubles as a work space at the 2014 HGTV Smart Home, the modern styling of classic, upholstered armchairs with nailhead detail bring elegance into the space. A repeated theme of white and red is creatively translated into houndstooth accent pillows.
In this eclectic living room, white and brown-patterned chairs complement the white fireplace, on which is displayed a glass vase of red flowering plants and a framed piece of art. Throw pillows in colorful patterns bring pops of color throughout, while the unique sunburst mirror, modern chandelier, and bright picture window give the space a light, airy feel.
A white Buddha statue, among other Asian accents used throughout the space, introduces a Zen mood to this porch sitting area. Beautiful white furniture and sheer white curtains look even brighter against the natural background and neutral floor. Throw pillows add pops of accent color in red, purple and pink, while the pair of metallic tables adds a touch of glam to the design.
A neutral color palette is highlighted by natural light and subtle yellow and red accents in this Asian-inspired living room. A white sofa with black sides is decorated with yellow and neutral throw pillows, and above the sofa, a long panel of artwork adds additional yellow to the space. A white coffee table, brown leather chair and tripod floor lamp complete the design.
This transitional living room is centered around a glass coffee table surrounded by a neutral sofa with nailhead trim and coordinating neutral chairs. A neutral rug breaks up the wooden floor and thin black shelves sit flush against the wall holding books and photographs. An accent pillow with a red design adds a small change in color along with a metallic fabric ottoman.
This kitchen's crisp, clean white design shows just how much a bit of color can make an impact. Aside from the turquoise chairs and red stools and pillows, the addition of lemons and sunflowers provides a cheery, bright yellow that can be changed out by the day — and those sunny-hued things can be functional, too! In the fall, why not try orange bell peppers paired with chrysanthemums?
Soft, neutral tones are spiced up with reds and oranges to give this traditional living room a warm glow. The circular arrangement of seating and plush materials invite people to sit and converse. Designer tip: Neutral tones are easily livened with splashes of color. Pillow covers can be changed throughout the year to add new colors and textures to a room.
The homeowners' love of all things nautical is on display in their living room thanks to a maritime flag motif, which inspired the throw pillows on the sofas and inserts to the media cabinet's doors. A navy-and-white rug fits the theme and anchors the space. Navy and red stockings add a special Christmas touch that works with the nautical theme for a "Merry Time" Christmas.
A mix of fun colors and patterns set the tone in this light-filled living space, part of a 12,000-square-foot waterfront home in Greenwich, Connecticut. From the high-gloss red coffee table to the pair of mustard armchairs to the multicolored pillows, the hues in this room contrast nicely against the white walls and ceiling. Wall-size windows offer a sweeping view to the patio and water view beyond.
Traditional rooms are best decorated with layers, and the key to a well-layered holiday home is to fill rooms with a mix of interesting textures. The lush greenery of the wreaths contrasts perfectly with the nubby, woven fibers of the throw pillows while the merlot-toned flowers introduce new shades of red into the space.
When you're installing Christmas decor, add elements that range in height; this will keep the room balanced. This family room's range in heights starts with a pair of wreaths flanking the fireplace, then moves down to the mantel decor and a few red accessories added to the built-ins and coffee table. Throw pillows, a vintage tricycle and floor cushions complete the look.
The open, uncluttered set up of this bedroom brings an industrial, modern influence to the contemporary design. The polished floor reflects the natural light from the pair of windows as well as the light fixture within the three-blade ceiling fan. A quilted gray bed comforter matches the flooring and is accented with a faux fur pillow. Abstract art gives a pop of vibrant red and pink color.
In Chris' bedroom, a mix of high and low created his designer bed ensemble. A custom bed upholstered in automotive vinyl was the area's biggest purchase; however, deceptively budget-friendly purchases were made for the remainder of the space. The demilune-shaped chests came from ZGallerie for $600 each, and not only do they add an elegant touch, they offer concealed storage. Table lamps atop the chests were found at a flea market and updated with red paint and new metallic drum shades. While Ralph Lauren bedding in a classic paisley print was a splurge, custom pillows made from $6.99 per yard IKEA tartan fabric kept the budget in check. To allow Chris to easily change up the looks of his bedding, the backs of each pillow were covered in a nautical print from Duralee.
