A bold-hued, overscale pendant and bright modern artwork stand out vividly against the gray-black palette of this industrial kitchen and dining space. Stainless steel stair rails, hardware and appliances gleam in the modern lighting, while upholstered chairs and barstools add an element of softness to the hard-edged space.

To minimize the presence of the stair in the hallway the designer eliminated the need for the outer stringer. Instead, they cantilevered the tread supports from a single stringer located adjacent to the wall. The treads themselves are sandblasted acrylic mounted to a pair of tapered steel angles. The tread design allows for maximum light to pass through to the space below. Glass infill panels create the guard at both the stair rail and surrounding guards. With the use of 2 layers of laminated glass no top rail was required at the guard locations. To support the glass, steel bar stanchions span between floors levels, adding an element of continuity to the various levels of the stacked stair. High levels of precision were required during the detailing and construction process to maintain absolute alignment between 3 levels as the stairway extends from upper bridge to the basement.
The wooden deck and stairs were problematic for the homeowners in terms of maintenance and also entertaining. So, it was replaced by a new stained concrete deck featuring steel railing and supporting columns to coordinate with other site elements. Designer Heather Garrett and her team increased the deck's footprint by a few feet to allow for additional seating and a convenient grilling space right off of the main living area. The new structure was designed to keep rain out of the patio below, so Garrett and her team seized the opportunity to improve the ground-level patio space by adding motorized screens, five ceiling fans, wood storage for the fire pit and an outdoor television. The aging patio slab was replaced by a new contemporary paver system and its footprint was enlarged to create more area for lounging.
