Open shelving and a sleek waterfall design on the island give the space a contemporary, streamlined look that underlies the eclectic decor.
Use recurring patterns and materials for a cohesive style throughout the kitchen. Designer Diane Foreman, of Neil Kelly Company used a mix of stainless steel and colored tiles for the backsplash of this 2016 National Kitchen + Bath Association Competition winning kitchen. The tile echoes the stainless steel in the sink and cooktop, and Foreman repeated a circular pattern throughout the room, a technique she says adds professional flair to the space.
As a focal point for this dramatic space, the design team chose beautiful Azul Macauba, a blue stone from Brazil, to top the oval-shaped island. A whimsical blue backsplash, in a swirling pattern, complements the blue counters and ties in the white cabinetry in the space.

For the final touch, un-lacquered brass hardware and pendant lights add even more character to the design.
In this galley kitchen, the colors from the bold wallpaper are repeated in the green wall paint and blue Ann Saks tile backsplash. The pattern plays off the delicate print of the Thibaut-fabric Roman shade.
To add warmth to the white kitchen, designers added White Oak detail around the space's upper cabinet. This addition plays nicely off the White Oak flooring. Subtle texture throughout the space, in details such as the white herringbone tile backsplash and the gray and black veining in the quartzite countertop, kept the space feeling light and airy, while contrast was used sparingly and the Turkish Kilim rug adds pattern and a playful, cheery style to the otherwise neutral color scheme.
