This sleek sitting room features matching white sofas with tufted back rests. Black and white accent pillows blend the sofas into the oval coffee table and black leather chairs. Beige curtains with black trim outline a full wall of windows revealing the gorgeous outdoor view. A long fireplace adds stylish warmth to the sharp design.
All it takes to create an outdoor getaway is a comfortable chair or two. Here, designer Erin Benedict chose a pair of Adirondack chairs softened by large cushy pillows. And, note the pulled-back curtain to one side: If you have a place to hang a curtain rod or wire, an outdoor curtain adds softness and privacy. “Elegant black and gold striped drapes perfectly frame the Adirondack chairs, adding a contemporary element while complementing the timeless architectural details of the early 1920s structure,” Benedict says.
A long black dining table is lined with unique wood chairs over a faded floor rug. Open space surrounding the table creates an open feel for the room. Gray built-in cabinetry lines the walls for concealed storage below window benches. Colorful throw pillows, Aa plant centerpiece and a large view of the outdoors decorates the room.
Oversized cushioned wicker chairs shaded by a muted umbrella, offer comfort before the outdoor fireplace – with inset birdhouse – constructed in multicolored stonework. A complementary walkway borders manicured rows of shrubbery which form a perimeter around beds of wildflowers. Accent pillows on the chairs draw from the color of the surrounding greenery.
This sunroom uses blue hues to echo the colors of the Hamptons Bay. Durable outdoor fabrics, striped pillows and glass lanterns accentuate the coastal aesthetic and create a comfortable spot for entertaining visitors. The bunching coffee table was a perfect addition to the room, too, as it can easily be separated into four small tables or assembled as a large coffee table.
Ensure that outdoor hang-out zones are comfortable at any temperature by incorporating warm and cozy elements wherever you can. Here, oversized pillows on the rocker and piled on the deck invite leisurely lounging, and a plaid wool throw not only looks pretty, but offers an extra layer of warmth. Of course, there’s also the hot tub to really warm up!
Large windows allow plenty of natural light into this Midcentury Modern living room. The light is reflected off the white walls and gray rug, making the space feel bright, warm and inviting. Designers then chose patterns and textures to add to the space, such as the teal and leopard print throw pillows and modern art pieces, that would make the space feel intimate without diminishing the outdoor views.
As seen on HGTV's hit show Cousins on Call, John and Anthony have brought in soft patio furniture from Home Depot, bright colored pillows and accessories from West Elm, and curtains from Berkensteins NYC have turned this cold backyard space into a warm, inviting, modern space that makes you want to feel comfortable and relax in the outdoors.
Collapsible safari chairs and director's chairs are excellent solutions for outdoor living rooms short on seating space. When the spots are in use, these chairs add a collected, well-traveled vibe and can be dressed up with pillows. Anytime the space is not in use, these can be folded and stored away for safe keeping.
Designers wanted this spacious, Midcentury Modern living room to fell intimate despite its large floor plan, so they carefully chose textures and fabrics that would add personality, but wouldn't overwhelm the beautiful exterior views showcased by the expansive windows. Walls are painted white to reflect the views of the outdoors, while the color is added through a few pieces of modern art and colorful, patterned throw pillows on the modern sofas.
When specifying upholstery for a beachfront house belonging to an active family, designers Betsy Burnham and Max Humphrey of Burnham Design opted to cover all the furniture in indoor-outdoor fabric. "Every piece is done in Sunbrella fabric — even the pillows and the custom area rug underneath. Outdoor fabric was the perfect choice for this room, which is "command central" for TV-watching and game playing.” And, they note, “In terms of the furniture plan, sometimes it’s dramatic to do fewer pieces and keep the scale large of each and bold; that’s the case here. We selected the largest sectional we could fit in the space and made sure it was super deep and comfy. We paired it with a large upholstered ottoman, which serves double duty as a coffee table and great place for everyone to kick up their feet.”
