Since this home is located in Los Angeles, it only makes sense to have French doors that can be opened to fresh air and sunlight at a moment's notice. In the library, two brown leather armchairs and a cream-colored seat soak up the views, with an oversized red area rug pulling in some additional warmth.
‘Sweet Summer Love’ clematis unfurls flowers all summer long that exude a sweet fragrance. On hot humid days, the scent hangs in the air. Blossom open a cranberry hue and shift to purple as they age. Best of all, ‘Sweet Summer Love’ won’t invade your garden with unwanted seedlings (like its cousin, sweet autumn clematis). Vines grow 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide—a great choice for an entry arch or pergola over a patio. Hardy in Zones 4-9.
After taking up the space that was a hallway and powder bathroom, the designers were left with an open and accessible bathroom for the clients to function properly. Here, the spacious vanity makes getting ready in the morning easy and comfortable. By using the client's love for natural elements, the designers were also able to create an oasis complete with a pebble wall and bench, full body shower and marble wrapped air spa with light therapy. Additional features like a hidden shower drain and under cabinet lighting make this bathroom extra special. All of these elements contribute ease of use and life style in order for the client to successfully age in place.
Strawflowers like Sundaze® Blaze (Bracteantha or Xerochrysum) should be harvested before the centers of the flowers open, so there's enough moisture in the blooms to make them easy to handle. Cut the stems 12 to 15 inches long, and remove the leaves. Tie the stems together (a rubber band is good for this, as the stems tend to shrink when they dry), and hang them upside down in a dry, dark spot that gets good air circulation. They’ll be ready to use in 2 or 3 weeks.
The composition of the house employs a simple relationship between public and private zones by directly splitting the two. The fracture, also known as the ‘link,’ is a distinct space from both the long, private bar and the open, shared public area. This separation is then reinforced by the choice of exterior cladding, with corrugated metal in the private zone and cypress siding in the public. Spatially, the link is also used for circulation of people, water, air, and electricity between the two sides of the home. In Horizon House, movement and passage are celebrated and rewarded with shifts in view and experience. Here, it is not simply the rooms, or destination, that carries the focus, but rather the circulation, or journey, itself.

A fungus is the culprit behind the black spots on peaches. It’s known as peach scab, and round spots that start out small and green slowly become black and almost velvety. With heavy infections, peaches may crack or be misshapen. As with most fungal diseases, wet weather is the trigger for infection to occur. It’s okay to eat peaches with scab. Just peel the fruit and remove any soft or brown spots. To help prevent this disease, clean up all fallen leaves, twigs and fruit. Prune to open up the tree’s inner canopy and increase air flow. Check with your local extension office for fungicide spray recommendations, which should start when petals fall from flowers in spring. Peach scab also affects nectarines and apricots.
