This modern staircase winds down to a clean, open foyer with white walls that carry throughout the home, unifying the space. Overhead, a four-paneled skylight features unique millwork that supports a hanging lantern with modern styling. A bold painting provides a punch of color.
The Capitol Hill Residence stair is centrally located in the light filled entry hall. Overhead is a sloping translucent roof that fills the core of the house with daylight. In order to maintain the function of this space, the stair needed to allow light to pass though it and filter all the way into the basement. In addition, we wanted to maintain a visual lightness to the stair through the use of materials and a simple, yet elegant form.
With a variety of artwork to brighten the white walls, this modern landing invites guests to stop and reflect on the images. A bold print depicting red stockings, pink pumps and green paint is particularly eye-catching. Its black background and white frame complement the stairwell's palette, resulting in a seamless transition from one level to the next.
Large windows allow natural light to flood this modern staircase, featuring light hardwood steps and a black metal railing. Two small gray stone end tables are positioned under a colorful modern photograph, while a vine ball sculpture adds a bit of texture.
To get from one floor to the next, designers added modern staircases to Pereira & O'Dell's floorpan. The glass and steel helps to enhance the industrial aspects of the building's original design, but the wood flooring of the stairs softens the designs initial harshness, creating a pleasing aesthetic.
One of the penthouse's stunning details (rest assured, there are many more) is its glass and marble floating staircase which connects the residence's two floors. New York City views go uninterrupted via glass window walls.
