A snakeskin area rug gives personality to this bright and stylish living room. A white coffered ceiling looks down on a large wood coffee table. A neutral sofa with woodgrain arm panels and a pair of matching chairs face into the table. Midcentury modern chairs with black leather cushions complete the seating collection. Natural light streams in from windows framed with long gray curtains.
A custom made steel pivot door adds a statement modern element to this living space design. Cool-toned hardwood gives off a gray coloring beautifully mixing with the white walls and all ceilings. A wood dining table is paired with tan leather chairs over an animal hide rug. A large wall of windows lets in natural light and offers a view to the yard.
In the master bedroom of a California mid-century modern home, designers Diego Monchamp and Ryan Brown of Brown Design Group took a bold approach to the asymmetrical architecture, emphasizing it with the contrasting colors of the walls and ceiling. “We used a spectrum of grays and blues, including a steel-blue wallcovering, throughout the room to make it feel sophisticated and neutral,” says Monchamp. “Wood elements always complement these muted tones.”
Designer Kerrie Kelly updated this living space with a club-like look using color, texture and modern furnishings. The sitting area, created with four matching accent chairs in yellow and a center coffee table in wood, invites family and guests to gather for good conversation or perhaps a night of games. The cool gray tones of the tray ceiling, industrial light fixtures and whitewashed brick add dimension and contrast against the sleek furnishings.
A favorite corner of the house is the the wine room, modeled after an old cellar resurrected with modern materials. Stainless steel chillers were installed into the patterned grey stone slabs to limit the refrigeration behind the glass doors. This keeps the homeowners from having to cool the entire room, making the space a cozy corner to comfortably enjoy a glass of wine. A conversation piece was added to the ceiling with the chandelier made of wine corks.
This kitchen by designer Mark Dutka in his own home near the Northern California coast was designed to reflect the colors of the local sky, sand and forests. A gorgeous sky blue accent wall gives depth to this small, open-plan modern kitchen. Wood beam ceilings and saltillo tile floors offer a nature-inspired contrast to the metal and gray. Halogen pendant lights suspended from an overhead support above the counter peninsula offer a creative lighting solution.
The owners of this redesigned 1960s split level home wanted the garage apartment to have as much character as the interior of the main house, so they hired designers to create a rustic, craftsman oasis with modern touches. The walls and ceilings are swathed in wood that reflect the woods that surround the home, while the bed is nestled into the walls of the small space. Gray French doors separate the cozy sleeping quarters from the rest of the house.
This pretty living room’s neutral color palette offers a clean backdrop for the layers of traditional, modern and vintage elements in the space. Gray walls create contrast with the moulding around the ceiling and entryways. A Restoration Hardware sofa in a soft shade of periwinkle is a perfect complement to the home’s traditional bones. A pale pink rug completes the room’s palette of light pastels. The feminine color palette works in partnership with the vintage details in the room like the coffee table, featuring curved legs that have a feminine feel.
As seen on season 1 of Sarah Sees Potential, designer Sarah Richardson filled this large living room with cozy, eclectic furniture and decor. Dark pink walls were painted a fresh white and a once over-imposing fireplace replaced with sleek white marble. Floor-to-ceiling curtains in a cheery yellow were hung to enhance the room's picture windows and add bold visual interest to a large, white wall. A gray and white patterned rug ties together the sleek modern furnishings and adds warmth to the new hardwood floors.
