The project was a cabin retreat for the owners and their siblings and extended families, with the idea that they’d gather at the home on various occasions. That meant the family needed both private and communal spaces so everyone would feel at home and relaxed. The house is packed with space but has a cozy cabin feel.
At night, ample windows and carefully planned exterior lighting turn this mountain cabin into a warm, welcoming beacon for its owners and guests. The resulting design features a frame construction with log accents and siding, and the house is packed with space but has a cozy cabin feel.

Two concrete walls cradle a fir plywood box and allow it to cantilever over the hillside, reducing effective site disturbance. Elevating the cabin allowed for unobstructed views downslope and to the mountains beyond, transforming a modest living space from an ordinary room to a viewing platform that extends from inside to out.

Decatur is known for its distinct, historic neighborhoods, eclectic food, and vibrant downtown: it is not known for log cabins. My clients are the owners of this unlikely urban retreat, and wanted to design a space that provided a TV-free zone to read, relax, eat, and play games as a family.
We got rid of the draperies and painted the windows gray for a more open and modern feel. A new mantle and all new furniture made for a refreshed and now usable space!
