A square modern fire pit was key amenity when Grounded Modern Landscape Architecture captured as much useable outdoor living space as possible in a coastal California home. The odd-shaped area was challenging but the result shows a creative design for a small space. Grounded won a San Diego chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects award for the project.
Designing a home for one family can be a challenge, but designing a home to be shared by two brothers’ families? That’s another proposition altogether — and one architect Matthew Collins of Uptic Studios met with the help of an open layout. “The goal of the project was to create a modern log cabin on Coeur D’Alene Lake in North Idaho,” he explains. “Uptic Studios considered the combined occupancy of two families, providing separate spaces for privacy and common rooms that bring everyone together comfortably under one roof. And we not only had to take into account the space itself, but also all of the people who would be living there. One of the brothers in the family is a chef, so we kept that in mind when designing the open kitchen and living room. We made sure to create a common room just off the kitchen, to bring everyone together. A delicate balance of natural materials and custom amenities fill the interior spaces with stunning views of the lake from almost every angle.”

Green's focus on inventive Mediterreanean fare offers up nods to Greece in an oregano-infused chicken and to African foodways in a berbere-accented lamb dish with kale and a luscious, tangine-spiced farrotto. A caramel-poached golden beet salad with goat cheese mousse illustrates Green's desire to blend haute cuisine flavors and ingredients with delicious accessibility. Cocktails and craft beer offerings are imaginative and often feature local distilleries like Old Fourth Distillery and ASW as well as Jekyll Brewery, Terrapin and Hapeville's own Arches Brewery so diners can sample some locavore flavor.
