This backyard building looks like a shed, but it's actually a sauna. The 8-by-12 foot structure is the best size
for an outdoor building that houses a sauna, according to Minnesota sauna builder Glenn Auerbach.
His saunas include a changing room and sauna room and a pitched roof.
Light, white and bright was the theme of this space. Logs were brought in from Minnesota to cut and stack the fireplace in an artistic way (who knew you couldn't find these in California!), giving the perfect balance to the room and creating a natural, organic layer to the old, never used fireplace.
After a fire burned the home to the ground, a Minnesota family rebuilt their home and worked with Southview Design to redo the landscaping. The new patio has Belgard Urbana pavers in various patterns, including an area cut out for plants. The natural stone boulders around the fire pit are made of Fond du Lac limestone.
Granite bridges provide the perfect path to explore the garden. A floating patio island showcases the round bed and tranquil views of the pond. The inspiration for this entry garden came from the owner, who wanted an “Eastern” garden that would work vicariously during their 11 month stay in Minnesota. Water was to be a major part of the design, as well.
The paver walkway narrows and widens, adding interest to the renovated landscape and exterior of a Minnesota home. Southview Design laid out the red brick pavers in a soldier course pattern and selected a lighter tone for the walkway's border. Modular retaining walls with wide steps and landings extend the home's architecture to the street.
A sport court provides the perfect spot for at-home athletic play. The sunken court creates privacy and a natural fit for stadium seating featuring durable artificial turf. Painting the court the colors of the family's favorite team (Minnesota Gophers) brightens the scene. A storage shed offers a convenient stash for sport equipment. The shed has a green roof, which is tilted at an angle so plantings are easy to see.
Josh Swanson is mixing his passions, buying flowers that match the colors of his favorite NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings. He selected yellow mums, and white and purple pansies. Marigolds are the most popular annuals among millennial organic gardeners (24 percent), followed by pansies, geraniums, zinnias and impatiens (13 percent each), according to The Home Depot 2015 Fall Gardening Survey.
Red maple (Acer rubrum) is beloved for its red flowers that blanket the tree in spring, opening before leaves appear. Summer leaf color is a steady green. Autumn triggers a color show with varying shades of red, from brilliant to deep burgundy. ‘Autumn Spire’ red maple is an upright, narrow accent tree that embodies the traditional beauty of red maple in a size that fits any yard. Trees grow 50 feet tall and 20 to 25 feet wide. They’re drought tolerant once established and also withstand flooding. Developed by the University of Minnesota, this maple holds its own where winter thermometer readings linger below zero. Expect trees to live 80 to 100 years. Hardy in Zones 3-6.
