Evenly spaced recessed can lights truly enhance the gold and metallic hues of this luxurious master bedroom. For additional lighting, four table lamps deliver focused task lighting around the bed and dressers. Plus, dark floor-to-ceiling draperies make it easy to shield the natural light from the window and quickly set the mood. "Think boutique hotel rooms with blackout curtains; augment with a myriad of light sources on dimmers, of course. It'll always feel like you're on vacation at home," says Jamie Laubhan-Oliver of D Home.
Metallic plaster continues from the master bath into the master bedroom of this Mediterranean-inspired luxury estate. A cut stone fireplace adds elegance and warmth to the spacious room. Stone columns on either side of the bed support an arch outfitted with recessed reading lights. Draperies open and close with a button to block light for sleeping or reveal views from the tall windows during the day.
A white Buddha statue, among other Asian accents used throughout the space, introduces a Zen mood to this porch sitting area. Beautiful white furniture and sheer white curtains look even brighter against the natural background and neutral floor. Throw pillows add pops of accent color in red, purple and pink, while the pair of metallic tables adds a touch of glam to the design.
A window lets in the perfect amount of natural light to frame this sitting area. Beige curtains surround the window and compliment the neutral tone of the carpet. A blue chevron blanket and a patterned pillow decorate the arm chair for a relaxed but stylish look. A cube leather ottoman with thick stitching and a small metallic table add texture to the area.
This elegant sitting room boasts a royal air with a lovely white and cream color palette. Inward facing sofas padded with plush throw pillows create cozy seating in front of the white fireplace with accent panel extending from the mantel. Glass and metallic tables add airy decor to the room while hardwood floor and crossing wooden ceiling beams add a warm foundation. Gold curtains pull pack to reveal outside access through glass doors.
A white geometric headboard gives a subtle, decorative support behind the clean, white bed linens. Green table lamps, thick green stripes on the curtains, and a green rug compliment the small green details in the bed covers for a fresh accent to liven the room. Gold decorative pieces and a gold lamp add a metallic flair. A modern desk chair and white desk create a home office work space.
This stylish Philadelphia studio utilizes every inch of space without making the room seem busy. The neutral walls and bedding keep the space controlled and balanced. "I tried to separate the space with organic textures, eclectic accessories, shiny metallic objects, soft draperies and unique lighting schemes," HGTV fan greendesigner says. To quickly hide the bedroom from the kitchen and dining area, he added tall draperies as an easy room divider. Tip: Downsize the furniture to expand the space — buy a loveseat instead of a large sectional. If you like to entertain, invest in small barstools: They take up little space and provide plenty of seating for guests.
My practical approach to dining room design is to choose amazing chairs with an understated table or just the opposite so that they aren’t competing to be the focal point. Here we selected a classic double pedestal table to compliment ten plush chairs with metallic woven interiors and soft white leather backs. The drapery is as clean as the chair’s design and the bar cabinet is intentionally white to allow the 72”x72” abstract painting to become the star of the show. It was one of the pieces from our client’s existing collection that I insisted we keep. This room is also an example of how well classics and contemporary marry. The chandelier, inspired by the painting, mimics the repetition in the panels and is shaped like the table to which it’s perpendicular. Harmony is a key ingredient to successfully designed rooms.
