Design Tip: do not be scared of planting English Roses close to the edge of the path or seat where they may spill over. Their proximity makes it all the better for appreciating the beautiful flowers and delicious fragrances. Michael Marriott, technical manager and senior rosarian of David Austin Roses.
David Austin's 2016 introduction 'The Poet's Wife' is the rose hybridizer's first new yellow English Rose since 'Charles Darwin' in 2003. "Yellow roses with a fine flower, strong fragrance, repeat bloom, true garden strength and excellent disease-resistance are very difficult to breed, making them rare indeed," said Michael Marriott, Austin's technical director and senior rosarian. The new variety's yellow color is unusually rich and the fragrance is unusually strong and appealing. It blooms abundantly from early summer till frost.
‘Imogen,’ another shrub rose from English breeder David Austin, has a button eye, like most so-called Old Roses (a class of roses grown before hybrid teas debuted around 1867). Its lemon-yellow buds open to frilly flowers that gradually become cream-colored. Michael Marriott, an Austin rose expert, recommends growing it with soft blue and lilac perennial flowers. 'Imogen's' scent is a mix of fresh apple and almond with a touch of musk and cloves. Grow it in zones 5 to 9 and expect flowers from early summer till frost.
