Need an ornamental grass for a spot with light shade? Check out autumn moor grass (Sesleria autumnalis). This non-native grass gets its name from the show it stages in autumn. That’s when tan seedheads appear, standing well above the clump of bright green leaves. Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, autumn moor grass holds its own in a mixed planting bed, adapts well to containers and makes an eye-catching planting en masse. Cut clumps to the ground in winter or very early spring. Plants grow 1 to 2 feet tall and wide. Hardy in Zones 4-8.
If they’re keep in a cool spot (but out of drafts), poinsettias can last long past the holidays. Give your plant bright, indirect light and water when the soil starts to feel dry. As with most houseplants, avoid overwatering, and drain the saucer, so the plants’ roots won’t rot. Use a balanced fertilizer every couple of weeks to feed the poinsettia as long as it’s actively growing. Getting the plant to rebloom next year is difficult; most people compost their poinsettias and buy new ones each season. You can also keep them to enjoy as green houseplants after all the red "leaves" drop.
If a grow light is out of the budget for starting seeds, a windowsill can work instead. To help your seeds germinate, place them in a spot that stays consistently warm — on top of the fridge or a radiator are good options. Shift them to the sunniest south-facing windowsill you’ve got as soon as a bit of green is showing above the soil line. If your windowsill is drafty or cold, lay down a towel or old t-shirt like a blanket and then set your pots on top.
A south-facing window is your idea
Also known as coralbells, heucheras bring season-long color to the garden and vase with their tinted leaves. Look for heuchera in a host of shades, including gold, purple, lime green, burgundy, almost black and silver. In the garden, heuchera is versatile, growing in full sun to full shade. Some varieties have a specific light preference, so be sure to read the plant tag prior to purchase. Use heuchera leaves to add color to arrangements, or pick the airy flower spikes. Blossoms appear from early to midsummer, depending on variety. Deer-resistant plants grow 6 to 8 inches tall by 10 to 12 inches wide. Hardy in Zones 4-9. Good vase companions for heuchera: gas plant, Oriental lily, hosta leaves, zinnia and anise hyssop.
I don't think I've ever been so excited to walk into someone else's kitchen. The Blehm's family kitchen is full of new and innovative ideas. The soft mint-green cabinets were the first breath of fresh air. The color, formerly only used as complimentary, has made a comeback and has been reinvented as a neutral foundation color in unexpected spaces. That refreshing color coupled with classic white counters and marble backsplash feels simultaneously both nostalgic and brand new. The island lighting is a magnificent display of creativity. Angela Blehm upgraded three simple spheres by designing a custom cage constructed from white oak. It’s a one-of-a-kind solution and an amazing focal point for the kitchen. The natural texture of the wooden cage along with the cabinet pulls, adds just enough warmth to make the family's gathering spot feel even more approachable and inviting.
