Hot pink walls spread a diamond pattern throughout this colorful sitting room. A tufted purple bench with a circular design sits in the center of the room atop a leopard print rug. A green sofa rests against one wall, while a turquoise sofa fills a window nook on the opposite end of the room. A pair of black and white chairs completes the eclectic seating area.
"I don't know what my home style is" says Steele. "I like fun and different and colorful." Her study in the front of the house is defined by her eclectic sense of style, with wood paneling brought into the 21st century with chic black paint and a mix of colorful pillows, leopard print and a few hot pink items illustrating Jamie's love of color.
Large windows allow plenty of natural light into this Midcentury Modern living room. The light is reflected off the white walls and gray rug, making the space feel bright, warm and inviting. Designers then chose patterns and textures to add to the space, such as the teal and leopard print throw pillows and modern art pieces, that would make the space feel intimate without diminishing the outdoor views.
What was once a bedroom in a Charleston style home is now a chic, teal dressing room/closet, thanks to Nicole Norris, ASID, NCIDQ. A cheery turquoise color was chosen for the built-ins and balanced with a luxurious leopard print carpet. Other glamorous touches include a gorgeous crystal and hemp chandelier, sparkling drawer hardware, an upholstered fabric wall behind the glass shoe shelves and a custom-made full-length mirror.
The funky textures and patterns in this space help to add depth and personality to a large room. Modern furniture keeps the design continuous, while teal fabric and leopard print can be found throughout the space. To add texture to some of the darker colored furniture, designers added fuzzy pillows. To complete the space, designers added unique accent pieces and statues, showing off even more of the homeowner's personality, making the space feel intimate despite its largeness.
To give this Midcentury Modern living room personality and depth, designers added funky pattern, unique accents and cool textures to the space. A leopard print chair and blue patterned couch soften the space, making it feel intimate, while the modern furnishings, such as the end table and lamp, continue the modern design. Along the back wall, stone has been carried halfway up the wall. This stone conceals the television and also serves as a display for some of the modern art in the space, while the large giraffe statue draws the eye to this part of the space.
With so much amazing design going on in this living room, it’s easy to miss some of the smaller details that make it work. Tamara does an excellent job of creating layers in this living room. Every instance of a pattern or color is echoed or repeated somewhere else in the room so that nothing feels out of place. Just in this vignette, the leopard print of the pillow is repeated in the stool, while the yellow of the throw blanket is repeated in several of the art pieces on the wall. This maximalist approach works best when every element in the room reinforces several others.
Erin’s modern twists are subtle but substantive - little moments that have a big impact on the feel of the entire home. One of the main moments is this stairway leading to the second floor. The massive gallery wall that flows up the stairs is one of the designers favorite moments. “I mixed in fun little antiques, paintings and mirrors to keep it feeling organic,” she states. But the star of this vignette is unquestionably the leopard-print floor runner. “My stair runner is a total signature piece,” she admits. “I questioned maybe changing it a while ago and the response on social media was pure horror. So it stays.”
Seana’s bedroom is a seamless mix of the opulent and the effortless. While she finds that natural colors make it difficult for her to create the bold looks that she prefers, her bedroom has been designed to be a tranquil retreat. Providing the flair she needs in the space falls to the mix of gold tones that she weaves throughout the space, including a pair of leopard print side chairs and the framed Egyptian papyrus art that hang over the bed. The room is the final note in a song that Seana spent four years learning how to sing. Now that it’s out, she’s pretty happy with the results. “I love everything about my home,” she beams, “The windows, the plentiful art, the balance of bold and tasteful elements, and the fact that my decor documents the story of my life.”
In this living room, patterns and textures work together to create an intimate vibe in this large, open space. Patterns like the cheetah print featured on this chair are prominent throughout the space and play off the modern art, bringing a cohesive design to the space.
